This module establishes a common understanding of elements of poetic discourse. Students will also be asked to analyse a selection of poetry and will be introduced to the basic
terminology of poetic analysis. The unit will depend to a large extent on the material contained in weekly hand-outs and in the two core reading texts. Sessions are structured

This module looks closely at the development of the novel during the eighteenth and nineteenth-centuries. Texts are located within their social and historical contexts, and explored
in relation to the transition from rural to urban economies and settlements; the growth of the metropolis; the ‘condition’ of the working classes under industrialisation; women’s

aspirations to independence; the margins. Students study examples of the social realist text, the ‘condition of England’ novel, the fin de siècle text, naturalism. Through a close
analysis of both form and content, students develop their understanding of the novel’s narrative technique, structure, and generic fluidity.

This Module studies the Greek and English Renaissance stages and explores original staging conditions, developing students’ understanding of the relationship between space,
architecture and meaning, as well as examining their respective social contexts. We will examine the original performance conditions of each period and analyse the relationship of

form to meaning paying particular attention to changing concepts of dramatic tragedy. Many of the plays are quite short, but that said, the reading for this Module is fairly heavy; the
goal in setting the syllabus has been to expose students to a representative variety of tragic drama in the periods under examination.

Writing for Stage and Screen offers students an introduction to the craft of dramatic writing. Students develop an original idea through an outline to a completed short (15 minute)
script. Through reading play texts and screenplays, watching films and plays, reading about theory and a visit from a professional playwright, the students learn to watch theatre and

film critically and develop their own creative practice. The course is practice-based, including writing exercises in every class, as well as writing workshops where students can support
each other in script development.

This module introduces students to the challenge of telling stories drawn from real life. Through a process of reading, discussion and practical exercises, students will learn how to
combine the techniques of fiction with direct observation and research to create vivid, engaging and factually accurate narratives. Students will be encouraged to analyse and

experiment with different forms of nonfiction, including biography, family history, the braided personal essay, reportage, food and travel writing. Students will learn basic research
methods and explore the ethical issues that can arise when writing about real people and events.

This unit offers students the chance to engage with a selection of Shakespeare’s drama, on the page, on stage and on film. Shakespeare’s range as a dramatist will be conveyed by
moving from the early to the late plays, and exploring examples of comedy, history and tragedy. We will be applying feminist theory to a number of the texts as well as exploring
responses to interpreting the texts by actors and directors. The module will explore Shakespeare’s dramatic texts and changing approaches to their production since their original

performances in the Elizabethan and Jacobean theatre. In the opening lecture and in our work on individual plays, we will explore the work of Shakespeare in the context of the
politics, religion, social conditions of his own time and ours. We will explore the impact of performers, directors, legislators and critics on the reception and production of
Shakespeare’s work at different key points.

This module introduces key concepts and approaches to adapting literature – such as novels, biographies and plays – into screenplays for media such as film and television. Students

The module takes a postcolonial theoretical approach to selected postcolonial novels. Texts chosen are written from or about India, Africa and the Caribbean. We use these texts to
look at the recent histories of colonialism, migration and the formation of nation states. The module connects these texts through a focus on the following concepts: colonial

histories and the relationship of the past and the present; diaspora; postcolonial identities; location and geography; liminality; hybridity; traditions of resistance and opposition;
gender, “writing back”/intertexuality; culture and class.

The module will focus on the cultural practices and technologies of urbanity modernity and investigate how these are represented in and engender the stylistic, structural and
linguistic features of literary modernism. The primary texts studied will be modernist novels and poetry (1890 – 1930) with a focus on topoi such as the motorcar, the
DESCRIPTION OF MODULE café, and the cinema. An important element of the module is the study of critical and cultural theory on the city in modernism. Students will be asked to appraise texts which engage
with these theoretical approaches and concerns. Students will be required to study and research a topos/individual author in depth, focusing on characteristic literary styles
and preoccupations, as well as engage with relevant theory.

This module offers students the opportunity to examine in detail a selection of late twentieth-century and twenty-first century fiction. The texts selected reflect different cultural
contexts and represent a range of stylistic, structural and linguistic responses to popular, theoretical and cultural issues. All the texts studied are, in different ways, ground
DESCRIPTION OF MODULE breaking and innovative. An important focus of the module is the study of critical and cultural theory that includes or reflects contemporary responses to the postmodern, a
preoccupation with globalization, transnationalism, cosmopolitanism, trauma and contemporary theories of affect. Students will be asked to appraise texts which engage with these
theoretical approaches and concerns.

implicates the process of dramatisation, and much of this module will be concerned with that process too.

Global Journalism will take as its starting point the economic, cultural and political shifts that have taken place since the 1990s. The module will explore contemporary ideas about
‘the global’ and critically examine both the utopian and dystopian claims that have been made about global culture and technologies and the role of contemporary journalism. The
