LESSON PLAN IN ENGLISH 9

TOPIC: Literature: “Figures of Speech”

Content Standard:
The learner demonstrates understanding of how Anglo-American Literature and other
text types serve as means of valuing other people; also how to use processing information
strategies, different forms of adverbs and conditionals for him/her to play an active part in a
Chamber Theatre presentation.

Performance Standard:
The learner proficiently plays an active part in a Chamber Theatre presentation through
employing effective verbal and non- verbal strategies based on the following criteria: Focus,
Voice, Delivery, Facial Expressions, Style and Body Movements or Gestures.

Formation Standard:

The learners will become Vincentians who are grateful and contented of God’s
masterpieces.

Specific Objectives:
With the use various activities, the learners will be able to:

1. Identify the figures of speech used in the poems


2. Explain examples of figures of speech
3. Write a poem with at least 5 examples of figurative language

40 minutes
(November 19-24, 2018)

Encounters 1-2

Introduction

 Motivation
o Let the students observe the following pictures and ask the following question:
 Which of the photos are more attractive than the other? Why?

 After getting answers from the students, explain the following:


o With the given pictures, it is more attractive or engaging if there are colors. Just
like reading a story, if the reader can create mental image because of the words
they read on a selection, comprehension is more likely to occur. Pictures will not be
boring and too demanding, as well as reading a literary text.

 Abstraction
o Write the words “literal” and “figurative” on the board.
o Ask the students to differentiate the two words.
 Discuss and let the students read what figurative language is.
o Figurative language creates figures (pictures) in the mind of the reader or listener.
These pictures help convey the meaning faster and more vividly than words alone.
o We use figures of speech in "figurative language" to add color and interest, and to
awaken the imagination.
 Using a PowerPoint presentation, discuss the first four figures of speech.
o Simile
o Metaphor
o Hyperbole
o Personification
 Give examples for each figures of speech.

Integration
 Abstraction
 To check the understanding of the students, ask the following questions:
o What is a figure of speech?
o How many figures we have just discussed?
o Define and give example of a figure of speech we discussed.

Encounters 3-4

Introduction

 Call the student assigned for the word of the day.

 Ask students to recapitulate the previous lesson.


 Show example sentences in the PowerPoint, and call a student to determine the figurative
language expressed.

Interaction
 Discuss the remaining figures of speech.
o Alliteration
o Irony
o Onomatopoeia
o Synecdoche
o Apostrophe
 Define and give examples for each figure of speech.
Integration

 Let the students get their copies of the two poems:


o “The Passionate Shepherd to His Love” by Christopher Marlowe
o “The Nymphs Reply to the Shepherd” by Sir Walter Raleigh
 Have the students refer to the lines of the two poems.
 Distribute the worksheet which will ask them to identify the figure of speech used in each
line and stanza number given. (10-item quiz)
o The following will serve as their legend in answering the worksheet.
 Poem 1 = “The Passionate Shepherd to His Love”
 Poem 2 = “The Nymphs Reply to the Shepherd”
 L# = Line Number

Introduction

 Discuss Sustainable Development GOAL 9: INDUSTRY, INNOVATION AND


INFRASTRUCTURE
o Explain to the students that just like figures of speech, building infrastructures in
our country, innovating machines are crucial to achieving sustainable development.

Interaction

 BRIDGING FIGURATIVES
o Directions: Work in group. Use/perform the following activities to construct
sentences/phrases using the varied figures of speech.
o GROUP 1-Make/compose a poem you’re your genre in free verse or in rhyme
scheme using simile and metaphor.
o GROUP 2- Compose a song with your own lyrics and melody in your chosen genre
using personification and hyperbole.
o GROUP 3- Make/compose a jingle with own genre using onomatopoeia, alliteration
o GROUP 4- Make a short role play with your own theme/concept using irony and
apostrophe.

Integration

 Individual Activity
o Let the students write a poem with at least 5 examples of figurative language.
 Collect poems.
