16 Tenses in english

1. Present Tense
The simple present is a verb tense with two main uses. We use the simple present tense when
an action is happening right

Formula:
(+) S + V1 (s/es)
(-) S + DO/DOES + NOT + V1
(?) DO/DOES + S + V1

Example:
(+) Rahadi stays in university today
(-) Rahadi doesn’t stay in university today
(?) Does Rahadi stay in university?
2. Present Continuous Tense
The present continuous tense is used for actions happening now or for an action that is
unfinished

Formula:
(+) S + Tobe + Ving
(-) S+ Tobe+ Not+ Ving
(?) Tobe + S + Ving

Example

(+)Rahadi is staying in university now


(-) Rahadi is not staying in university now
(?) Is Rahadi staying in university?
3. Present Perfect Tense
This tenses are used to express your experience. This sentence can used to say that you have
never had a certain experience. Present Perfect Tense didn’t use to describe specific event.

Formula :
(+) S + have/has + V3
(-) S + have/sas Not + V3
(?) Have/has + S + V3

Example
(+)Rahadi has stayed in university
(-)Rahadi hasn’t stayed in university
(?) Has Rahadi stayed in university?

4. Present Perfect Continuous Tense


this Tense is used to show that something started in the past and has continued up until now.
”for two hours’, ‘for two weeks’, ‘since yesterday’ are all durations which can be used with this
sentence.
(+) S + have/has + been + Ving
(-) S + have/has + not + been + Ving
(?) Have/has + S + been + Ving
Example:
(+)Rahadi has been staying in University for 4 years
(-)Rahadi hasn’t been staying in University for 4 years
(?) Has Rahadi been staying in university for 4 years?

5. Past Tense
We used this tense to talk about the past.

Formula:
(+) S + V2
(-) S + did not + V1
(?) Did + S + V1

Example
(+)Rahadi stayed in University last month
(-)Rahadi didn’t stay in University last month
(?)Did Rahadi stay in University last month?

6. Past Continuous Tense


This tense is used to say when we were in the middle of doing at a particular moment in the
past.

Formula:
(+) S + was/were + Ving
(-) S + was/were + NOT + Ving
(?) Was/Were + S + Ving
Example:
(+)Rahadi was staying in University yesterday
(-)Rahadi wasn’t staying in University yesterday
(?)was Rahadi staying in University yesterday?

7. Past Perfect Tense


The Past Perfect expresses the idea that something occurred before another action in the past.
It can also show that something happened before a specific time in the past.

Formula:
(+) S + had + V3
(-) S + had + not + V3
(?) Had + S + V3

Example:
(+)Rahadi had stayed in university
(-)Rahadi had not stayed in uniersity
(?)had Rahadi stayed in university?
8. Past Perfect Continuous Tense
We use the Past Perfect Continuous to show that something started in the past and continued
up until another time in the past. “For five minutes” and “for two weeks” are both durations
which can be used with the Past Perfect Continuous. Notice that this is related to the Present
Perfect Continuous however, the duration does not continue until now, it stops before
something else in the past.

FORM:

S + had + been + Verb-ing

Example

Rahadi had been staying in university for 3 years

9. Simple Future Tense


often called will. because, the modal auxiliary verb in this sentence is will.

FORM :

(+) S + WILL + Verb1


(-) S+WILL+not+Verb1
(?) will + S + Verb1
Example

(+)Rahadi will stay in university.


(-)Rahadi will not stay in university.
(?)will Rahadi stay in university?

10. Future Continuous Tense


Future Continuous has two different forms: “will be doing ” and “be going to be doing”. Future
Continuous forms are usually interchangeable.

FORM:
(+) S + will be + Verb-ing
(-) S + will not be + Verb-ing
Example
Rahadi will be staying in university

11. Future Perfect Tense


This sentence is used when we talk about the past in the future.

FORM:

(+) S + Will + have + Verb3


(-) S + will + not + have + Verb3
(?) Will + S + have + Verb3

Example

Rahadi will have stayed in university by 4 pm

12. Future Perfect Continuous Tense


We use the future perfect continuous tense to talk about a long action before some point in the
future.

FORM:

(+) S + Will + have + been + Verb-ing


(-) S + will + not + have + been + Verb-ing
(?) Will + S + have + been + Verb-ing ?
Example

Rahadi will have been staying in university.

13. Past Future Tense


this tense is used to express the events that WILL be done, BUT in the past, not the present.

FORM:

(+) S + would + Verb1


(-) S + Would + not + Verb1
(?) Would + S + Verb1?
Example

Rahadi would stay in University.

14. Past Future Continuous Tense


Past Future Continuous tells an action would be in progress in the past.

FORM:

(+) S + was/were + going to be + Verb-ing


(-) S + was/were + not + going to be + Verb-ing
(?) Was/were + S + going to be + Verb-ing

Example

Rahadi was going to be staying in university yesterday.

15. Past Future Perfect Tense


This tense is restates the action stated in Future Perfect Tense but with different time
dimension, it is in past time whilst the Future Perfect is in future time (not happen yet).

FORM:

(+) S + would + have + Verb3


(-) S + would + not + have + Verb3
(?) Would + S + have + Verb3
Example
Rahadi would have stayed in university.

16. Past Future Perfect Continuous Tense


Past Future Perfect Continuous Tense emphasizes on the course and the duration of the
action. Past Future Perfect Continuous Tense is used to tell an action which would have been
happening until a certain time (period) in the past.

FORM:

(+) S + would + have + been + verb-ing


(-) S+ would + not + have + been + verb-ing
(?) Would + subject + have + been + verb-ing?

Example

Rahadi would have been staying in university for 3 years
