What is a ray?

A ray is a part of a line but has only one endpoint, and extend endlessly in one direction. We name a
ray by it endpoint and one of its points. We always start on the endpoint. The figure is ray AB we can
also name it as ray AC. It is not correct to name it as ray BA or ray CA. In notation we write AB or AC.

What is a line segments?

A line segment is a part of a line that has two endpoints. We define a line segment AB.

Motivation.

1. Activity.
The following are angles:

2. The following are not angles:

3.Which of these are angles?

3. Analysis
a. How would you define an angle?
b. Is this an angle?
c. Why is this figure not an angle?

4. Abstraction

An angle is a union of two non colinear rays with a common end point. The two non colinear are
the sides of the angle while the common end point is the vertex. Or in the case of two colinear
rays but must be in opposite in direction having a common end points called the vertex.

An angle can be designated by its vertex. If more precision is required, three letters are used to
identify an angle. The middle letter is the vertex, while the other two letters are point one from
each side (other than the vertex) of the angle. For example.

The angle on the left can be named angle C. or angle BC A, or angle ACB. The mathematical
notation is <C, <BCA, or <ACB. An angle divides the plane containing it into two regions: the interior
and the exterior angle.

Measuring and Constructing angles.

A protractor is an instrument used to measure angles. The unit of measure we use is the degree
denoted by ° . angle measure is between 0° and 180 °. The measure of <A is denoted by m<A, or
simply <A.

From the figure determine the measure of the angle.

6. Application
Find a partner and let them draw a pie garden. With the following design. Using a long bond
paper.

1.Construct an angle garden with the following measures. <GHF is for egg plant having a 30-
degree measure. <FHE for pechay having a 60-degree angle. And <EHB for tomatoes having a
90-degree angle.
