The mass media causes bias in its audiences

Nowadays, we get a lot of information from mass media. We could easily know about a

various kind of events using our laptop or even smartphones. Sometimes it is very useful and

helps to improve the quality of our life. But if mass media spread fake news intentionally or not, it

will give people some wrong information, and it causes bias in the audiences. A piece of paper is

enough for the propaganda, but thousands of paper are needed to refute it. Once the prejudice

or the bias established, it is difficult to reserve it, which shows the dangers of mass media. Bias

makes people act and think wrong. I want to show how mass media causes the bias in its

audiences, and the effects from the bias.

For the first example, there is the construction of the Peace Dam in Korea. A lot of mass

media reported that Korea needs to build a huge dam due to the North Korea’s dam building

project. According to the government announcement and some news channel, Korea have to

build Peace Dam to protect Seoul from being flooded by water from North Korea. They said that

if the North Korea open their dam, the whole seoul will be flooded by the water in few hours, and

they need some donations for building the Peace Dam. It caused a serious bias that korea is in

danger to audience. People thought that the government’s announce is a true, and they need to

help building the dam. Thanks to kind people, the dam successfully completed. But the mass

media’s news were totally false. Their news were all fake news. Seoul will not be flooded by the

water even North Korea Open their whole dam. And research found that there was nosuch a huge
dam in north korea, and it will take about 60 years to build a huge dam to make seoul flooded

by the water. It was a self created play by government to make money by donation.

Secondly, there is another example of bias caused by mass media. An actor name A was

accused of sexual assault. According to media, A raped a woman in the hotel room about 20

years ago and try to keep it secret. A denied the charge. But the mass media directly reported

that they found the victim and interviewed her. A was kicked out from his entertainment company

and fired from every movie and drama. Furthermore, people required him to apologize to victim.

Finally, he apologized to her. But the truth was not that. The truth is, he never raped or commit

sexual assault. The woman who claimed that she is a victim had no exact evidence. Also the

media wanted to make an issue so they exaggerate the problem. But nobody compensate for his

innocent. Bias that he is a sexual criminal was caused by a mass media. As a result of that, he was

suffering from being falsely accused and fired from his workplace. Although his innocent was

proven, he is still unable to find a job in his field. This shows how mass media cause bias of a

person, and how it affects.

Lastly, I want to introduce about 5.18 Democratic Movement. There was a Democratic

Movement in Gwangju, Korea. So many innocent people died by the army's bullet. the

dictatorship overpowered the democracy movement by force. Due to the regime has taken over

the mass media, the media made a fake news about the movement. According to the mass media,

there has been a riot in Gwangju, and the government is holding it back. All the people in Korea
believed that government is doing great. Even they didn't know so many people are dying by the

bullets and bombs. This bias seems to be never solved. But a brave foreign reporter reported that

and the incident was reported all over the world. Thanks to the reporter, people finally realized

the truth and many people did the Democratic Movement. This is the example of the mass media

can cause a power bias because before the foreign reporter reported the incident, nobody knows

that it was not a riot. But the some people still has that bias in nowadays. They don't like

Gwangju people and they still think they are criminal. This is a tragedy of bias caused by fake

news of mass media.

I introduced three example of bias that caused by mass media and how it affects to the

people. Mass media, of course, we need it very much. It is truly useful and help us to get a lot of

information easily. But mass media isn't always tell the truth. Sometimes they could give you a

fake information, whether spread it intentionally or not. And sometimes, it cause some serious

bias that can affect an individual person, a society, or even a whole country. So we have to keep

thinking about the credit of the mass media not to be fooled by the news.
