This ethnic

从小耳濡目染

I was exposed to this since I was young

都有很多的这种音乐形式

There are plenty of music like this

包括我外公

我外公呢

Including my grandfather

他其实就是一个土家族的山民歌歌者

He was a folk singer

最开始我只是想把他记录一下

In the beginning I was just trying to record this

但是到最后呢

But in the end

我只是记录了一些他的碎片

I only managed to record bits and pieces of it

他是促使我拍整个片子的一个引子

My grandfather inspired me to record the entire documentary

我对我们自己的民族不是很了解

I don’t have enough understanding of my own ethnicity

我们对自己民族的了解只是停留在身份证上

Our understanding of our ethnic group is limited to what is on our identification card

我根本没有什么标签让我觉得自己是个少数民族

I do not label myself as an ethnic minority

再就是少数民族这个概念呢

Plus the entire concept of ethnic minority

在很多人的眼里呢

In the eyes of most people here

只是为了给孩子那个高考成绩加分啊

Is just something that gives extra credit to your child’s studies

然后传承下来的东西逐渐在减少

The things you inherit from the past generations

文化积淀的东西逐渐在没落
Especially the cultural heritage is getting fewer and fewer

我真实的记录真实的情况

I was merely documenting what was happening

我不想去传递什么

I was not trying to convey any specific message

大家看完用自己的感受

After you finish watching it, just use your heart

去理解就够了

To try to understand it, and that is enough

每个人都有每个人的理解

Everyone has their own understanding

可能就像一千个人心中

Just like perhaps to a thousand people,

有一千个哈姆雷特是一样的

There are a thousand Hamlet

经历了 180 多天

After 180 days

走了两万多公里

And twenty thousand kilometres

和四位土家艺人在一起生活的这些日子

The time I spent with the four folk artists

我内心是很有触动

I feel touched

不只是民间艺术的魅力

It’s not only the charm of the performance

还有他们对待艺术锲而不舍的那种态度

But also their spirit towards the art

对当下人而言

For someone like us

那是一种极其珍贵的人格力量

That is a very precious and powerful trait

我来这儿的初衷是为了学习

My original intention here was just to learn

学习这些濒临失传的民间艺术

About the disappearing arts like these

还有很多东西需要我们去挖掘去学习

There are a lot of things for us to explore, to learn

凭心而论能为他们做的事情太少

To be honest, I can’t do much for them

感受却有很多

But it affected me greatly

他们生活在这片土地上

They exist on this land

将来也属于这片土地

They belong to this land

他们的歌唱

Their songs

不知道是否还会延续

We don’t know whether it will be passed down to the generations to come

不忘记可能就是对他们

最大的尊敬吧

The highest level of respect is paid by not forgetting about them
