ITAD.2.9. DYEING AND PRINTING
Usual time of occurrence- 2nd semester
Duration- 2 weeks (60 hours)
Course type- Core
Course category- Studio

RELEVANCE To introduce the students to the traditional and contemporary

practices of dyeing, properties of dyes, principle of dyeing, technology of
dyeing, different classes of dyes available in the market and the suitability of
dyes for various kinds of materials The course gives the opportunity to
understand various kinds of printing methods with a historical perspective of
its development to the modern days and the latest methods followed.

COURSE OBJECTIVES
• To make students understand the phenomenon of dyeing
• To train students in the selection of the appropriate dye for the end purpose
of the product
• To understand the scientific methods of dyeing
• To create capability for developing a given shade using the available classes
of dyes on any textile material.
• To ensure the MSDS of Dyes and chemicals is understood and followed in
practice for human and environment safety
• To introduce students to understand the various methods of achieving
pattern with the following principles:
• 1. Resist Dyeing and Printing
• 2. Direct method of Printing using Wooden blocks, screens, digital printing,
etc.
• 3. Subtractive method such as discharge printing, etc.

COURSE CONTENTS
• History of dyeing
• Printing theory and technology
• Classification of fibers and compatibility with class of dye
• Scouring bleaching and mercerization of cotton
• Other finishes such as fire retardant, enzyme finishes etc., for fabrics
• Dyeing calculations
METHODOLOGY
• Theoretical inputs through Lectures
• Demonstration’s by faculty and technician of Textile labs
• Hands on practical’s at Institutes in house dyeing lab
• Visit to dyeing, printing units, both modern and grass root.
EXPECTED OUTCOME
• Students should be able to select the appropriate dye class and chemicals for
different fabrics and yarns
• They should be able to match shades on sample materials
• They should be able to dye given shades on their own on cellulosic and
protein, and synthetic materials.

ITAD.2.10. DESIGN PROJECT

1 Usual time of occurrence: 2nd semester
Duration: 3weeks (90 hours)
Course type: Complementary
Course category: Design Project
RELEVANCE The students of textile and apparel design need to understand the
methodology in developing surface ornamentation to enhance the value and
beauty of the fabric. Thereby giving a variety of choices to the consumers.

COURSE OBJECTIVES
• To apply the basic design inputs gained through the previous courses of the
first semester for developing patterns and ornamentation by methods of
embroidery, applique, printing, dyeing, etc.
• To train them in developing repeat patterns using elements and motifs
created during the course. Covering the variety of repeats, such as straight,
half step, eight point, etc
• In process the students will be encouraged to create innovative surface
designs by taking inspiration from nature, geometrical grid patterns, etc.
• To make students understand developing design patterns from nature
• To train students in the making of repeat patterns suitable for surface
ornamentation through printing
• To enhance the sense of composition and colour though developing
interesting patterns COURSE

CONTENTS
• Development of element units for repeat
• Creation of interesting patterns by repeated placement of elements in a
format
• Effective use of color and composition in a product
• Understanding the limitations for conversion of design from paper to cloth.
• Textile printing theory and methods of application of colour on fabric
• Understanding the use and application of software for surface design
• Developing at least 3 Colour-ways/ alternatives to each Design

METHODOLOGY
• Lectures and demonstration by faculty
• Hands on practical at Institutes’ in house dyeing lab
• Visit to printing units.
EXPECTED OUTCOME
• Students should be able to create elements suitable for developing
innovative and interesting patterns
• They should be able to understand repeat surface patterns to ornament a
surface
• They should be able to create and integrate attractive colour compositions in
the patterns and demonstrate their ability to develop unique and innovative
design ideas.
• Students design and develop a collection of minimum 3 surfaces

ITAD.4.6. DESIGN PROJECT 3

SEM 4
Usual Time of Occurrence – IV
Semester Duration – 10 weeks (300 hours )
Course type – project
Course category – enrichment
RELEVANCE In a rapidly changing world the nature of problems is growing
complex. The design education needs to prepare designers to address this
complexity. A System Thinking Approach is critical. This means that designers
need to consider their inter- relationships as part of their approach and
process.

COURSE OBJECTIVE
• To understand complexities of an activity/enterprise/settlement (specific to
crafts) and seek design opportunities for sustainable development
• To gain deeper insights into the eco system in which the activity exists, its
work culture; considering micro as well as macro aspects
• To understand the inter-relationship of the elements, contributing to the
larger system.
• To understand behaviour of a system as a whole. Identifying opportunities to
intervene in the system or create a new system.
COURSE CONTENT
• Introduction to Systems thinking and Systems Design Theory
• Understanding Systems, their elements, and mapping their
interrelationships, and purpose
• Introduction to Ergonomics and its relevance to Textiles and Apparel
• Understanding concept/s of Sustainability and Sustainable Development
• Primary and Secondary research for a selected area of craft production or
craft market.
• Understand the historical backdrop within which the system has developed
and its relevance in the present context.
