Philosophy of Teaching and Learning

To learn is to expand not only one’s knowledge but their opportunity as well. The

importance of learning is one all educators are aware of, and hopefully, the reason we all went

into this field. An education is more than just subject content and is about how us as teachers

teaches, just as much. No matter where a student comes from, school should be the equal playing

field where each and every child has equitable opportunity and it is my goal to make this a reality

for my students in my classroom. Therefore, as a teacher, students should be our main focus,

meaning our ways of supporting and teaching them must always be evolving and improving to

give them the best education possible and to aid them in becoming a global citizen.

A good teacher is skilled in the content area and knows how to explain the aspects of the

lesson but a powerful teacher is passionate about the lesson and passionate about the subject.

Teaching is about loving what you do and loving every level your students may be at and

committing to their overall understanding and making their learning student-centered. It is

important to get to know each and every one of our students and their learning strengths and

weaknesses to help them, educate them, and inspire them whether they have a C average in the

class or an A+. Getting to know each and every student is a vital part in creating a successful

teacher-student relationship and being able to teach in the most effective ways for our students to

understand. To inspire my students is to share my love of learning language with them and

encourage them to dive into the world of language themselves, making it important to know my

students and also create a positive learning environment filled with support no matter who they

are.

In this day and age, to be a global citizen is to be able to communicate with people across

the globe. Being able to speak someone else’s first language when communicating is a direct tool

in being able to understand their different cultures and perspectives that much better. To be able

to study a second, or even third language and open up these doors should be the right of every

child and a student’s socio-economic level, race, gender, orientation, nor any other demographic

should limit them from learning a second language and subsequently becoming this global

citizen, capable of living in and engaging with varying cultures and regions.

In any classroom, teachers must provide an environment of support and a clear focus for

the subject at hand. In a language class in particular, it is vital to create a positive classroom that

displays and talks about culture and tradition and strives to speak as much as possible in the

target language, giving the students the best chance they can have at acquiring this second

language. There are so many aspects to language that must be embraced—reading, writing,

speaking, listening, understanding different cultures, etc.—and I am committed to helping my

students understand as much as possible about the language. My classroom will be a place of

learning a language as well the countless different cultures that go with it.

Our goal must always be focused on bettering the students through our teaching and at

the end of the day, enjoying the learning experience with our students—enjoying the material

together. Bettering a student is providing them with opportunity no matter where they come from

and helping them grow while making sure they know, they have every right—as much as the

next student—to learn. I plan to strive to continue to grow as a teacher and constantly check

myself and improve my strategies. Learning is a right, teaching is a privilege.
