Chapter 1 Introduction to the study


Study context

‘The impact of Small to Medium Enterprises (SMEs) or the informal markets for the people living along
the major highway’. Since the development of the highway way back in the 1970s, many good and bad
things were introduced into the highlands. Many people living along the highways reacted towards
foreign ideas and ways of doing things. Many new ideas introduced have both the negative and positive.
The study would explore the positive impacts the highway has on the rural and suburban population
especially, small medium enterprises (SMEs). Many rural and suburban population are unemployed and
dependent very much on Small to Medium Enterprises (SMEs) and subsistence farming.

The money earned from these small to medium enterprises were used for their household needs for the
family. They also save leftovers to meet other necessary needs like school fees, building permanent
houses, clothes and food items. They also use the money to meet customary obligations like pride price,
compensation and also ceremonial feasts for the death relatives.

Small to medium enterprises (SMEs) has impacted many people, both the entrepreneurs and other
community members to actually improve living standards. The small and medium enterprise (SME)
sector generally create economic growth, job creation and reduce poverty along the highways. Many
entrepreneurs along the highways are becoming successful over time and actually moved into town and
cities venturing into big businesses.

2. The study topic


‘The research explores the impacts of small to medium enterprises (SMEs) for the population living
along the Highlands highway, especially in the Eastern Highlands Province.’ The main idea has actually
been stated as the title.

2.1. Problem statement defined.


‘The impact of the small to medium enterprises (SMEs) on the population living along the Highlands
highway in Eastern Highlands Province of Papua New Guinea.’ Looking back at the rural and suburban
population in Papua New Guinea a lot of our people live a subsistence life. The small medium
enterprises (SMEs) have impacted the lives of unemployed population along the highways. Many social
issues like criminal activities, prostitutions, poverty and drug addicts are being maximized in the
communities because of the people engaging themselves in profitable activities. Successful individual
tends to build high covenant houses, send children to higher institutions, law and order problems starts
to decline and all in all general living conditions does improves.

How does the small to medium enterprises (SMEs) impact the life of people living along the highlands
highway in the Eastern Highlands Province Papua New Guinea?

2.6. Specific research questions.


1. What are the impact of small medium enterprises on the people living along the highways?
2. How do the people utilize small to medium enterprises opportunities to impact their daily living?
3. What are the problems or challenges face by the small medium enterprises owners face along
Highlands highway in Eastern Highlands Province?
4. Why are many entrepreneurs successful while others are not successful?
5. How the public and private sectors can empower and motivate the entrepreneurs along the
Highlands Highway?

2.7. Research objectives


The study explores how the people living along the Highlands highway were being impacted by the small
to medium enterprises (SMEs) in Eastern Highlands Province of Papua New Guinea.

2.8. Specific objectives.


1. The study will basically explore why the people living along the Highlands highway in Eastern
Highlands are not benefited from the small medium enterprises opportunities
2. The study will explore and identify other small medium enterprises opportunities for the people living
along the highway in Eastern Highlands province.
3. Identify the problems or challenges faced by the entrepreneurs along Highlands highway in Eastern
Highlands Province.
4. Investigate the reasons of why many entrepreneurs are successful and others not successful.
5. Identifying the inputs of the public and private sectors to motivate and empower the entrepreneurs
along the Highlands Highway and direct entrepreneurs to access the any assistance.
