Lesson Objectives (i.e. anticipated outcomes of this lesson, in point form beginning with an action verb)

As a result of this lesson, students will be able to:

 Create a picture using whole, half of, and quarter of shape pieces

Teacher’s Prior Preparation/Organisation: Provision for students at educational risk:

 Make sure we have all of the materials:  All students can participate in this task, however I
 You will need blank white paper, coloured paper, will make sure that during, I will walk around to
pencils, scissors and markers keep students on task.

 Alena will need assistance labelling the shapes

with correct fractions. I will ask her the following
questions:
- How much of the shape (e.g. circle) are you using
for this part of the artwork? Answer may be: half of
it. Then show her that half of it looks like ½

LESSON EVALUATION (to be completed AFTER the lesson)

Assessment of Lesson Objective and Suggestions for Improvement:

Teacher self-reflection and self-evaluation:

Resources/References
Time Motivation and Introduction:
1.50pm  Today the students will create a picture by using wholes, halves and White paper
quarters of different shapes. They will also be asked to label the shapes
as 1, 1/2 or ¼. For extension, students can do smaller fractions to create
Introducing Fraction Art
more detailed artworks.
 Model the activity to the class while they are on the mat. Show them how
Coloured paper
you use a stencil to trace circles and squares, then cut them into relevant
fractions.

Lesson Steps (Lesson content, structure, strategies & Key Questions):

Stencils
Instructions for craft activity:
2pm  Students use stencils to trace shapes onto coloured paper.
Pencils
 They then cut the shapes into quarters, halves or leave them whole

 Then they label the part accordingly (1/2, ¼ or 1)

Scissors
 They then glue the shape onto a bigger piece of paper and create a
picture with their shapes.

 This is open ended so students can make any kind of picture they
would like. I will model it to create a beach scene, however students
can choose another kind of landscape, animal etc. as long as they
label the parts correctly.

Lesson Closure:(Review lesson objectives with students)

2:40pm  At the end of the lesson do a “gallery walk” whereby we lay each
artwork on the desk and in a line (like a conga line) we trail around
the classroom and look at one another’s artworks.

 When they are all completed, I will display these on the wall where
the Minecraft selfies currently are hung.

Transition: (What needs to happen prior to the next lesson?)

2:50pm  Students will pack up their materials, pack and stack and sit on the
mat ready for the end of the day.

2

Assessment: (Were the lesson objectives met? How will these be judged?)

The objectives will be judged upon whether all students have contributed in
this art activity and I will question students throughout the lesson to see that
they understand that fractions make a whole.
