Difference between Pipeline, Piping, Tubing, Ducting & Conduit

Difference between Pipeline, Piping,

Tubing, Ducting & Conduit
Published on October 2, 2017

As to much if we go by the basic English dictionary it defines all the above mentioned
structures as:

"A hollow, usually cylindrical body of metal, glass, rubber, or any other material
used especially for conveying or transporting liquid and gases
under pressurized condition"

So a question arises if all are to be hollow structures to convey liquids or gas than why we
use different words in our day to day life........

The Difference is:-

Pipeline - Long series of Pipes usually of large diameter often underground with
few fittings & equipment's mostly Pumps & Valves mainly to control the flow, that
are laid with an intention to transport any fluid whether liquid or gas over long
distances.

Messaging
Piping - Large series & networks of Pipes within the well defined boundaries of
the plant/plot with all fittings & equipment's like Pump, Valves, Unions & other
Miscellaneous items with an intention to transfer fluid from one facility to
another within those boundaries as required.

Tubing - Large Series & networks of Tubes with most minimal fittings & Valves
without the intentions to regulate the flow, just to transfer processed fluids from
one facility to another.

Conduit - These are the pipes whose networks are laid within the boundaries of
facility not to transfer any fluid but to protect the electrical and optical fibers
& cables from external environment.
Ducting - An often enclosed passage sometimes open also or channel of any
shape from cylindrical to cuboidal for conveying any substance from solid to gas
from one place to another.

To understand better "All Piping, Tubing, Conduit can be classified under Duct but
not vice -versa "

The Few Differences are as follows:-

1. Pipes - They are classified on basis of Nominal Diameter (N.D.).

2. Tube - They are classified on the basis of Outside Diameter (O.D.).

3. Conduit - They are also classifieds on the basis of Nominal Diameter (N.D.).

One should not confuse oneself with Nominal Diameter, Outside Diameter, Inside Diameter.

Nominal Diameter - It is also known as "Trade Diameter" or also called as "Layman

Diameter".

Outside Diameter - Distance between 2 points on the "Outer Surface" of a figure such that
if a line segment joins them it must passes through the center of that figure.

Inside Diameter - Distance between 2 points on the "Inner Surface" of a figure such that
if a line segment joins them it must passes through the center of that figure.
Note - As like Pipe, Conduit does not comes with many Schedules/Wall Thickness in the
market & secondly it can not be used as Pipe replacement because Pipes are designed for
Pressure Applications whereas Conduit is not.
