English Lesson For Children’s / EYL

In Indonesia, English is considered a foreign language not a second language, because

the second language in Indonesia is Indonesian while the first language is the mother
tongue which is usually the regional language. Although in Indonesia English is not an
official language, but mastering English is also important because as we know English is
the most spoken used in the world. Therefore, if we master English then the
employment opportunities are much higher, obtaining information and expanding
friendships around the world is much easier.

Generally many people who ask, especially parents who want their children to master
English, “at what age should children learn English?”. The answer is as early as
possible. Children under 6 years are very sensitive to speech signals. That is, they can
imitate and learn accent very easily. Besides that they also have high memory so that it
is easy to absorb a material and remember it for a long time. They also have great
curiosity. They are very active, they like to ask questions, explore something and find
new ways to practice. This is the reason why learning English from an early age is
highly recommended.

How to teach English to children?

Based on the interview that I did to Vira, it can concluded that the medium of English
language learning such as games, is very helpful in increasing children’s motivation in
learning English, and is very helpful in increasing vocabulary of children. Also the
concept of appreciation is needed, such as giving stars if the child succeeds in
answering, so the child is more enthusiastic about learning English.
