CETIRIZINE
INDICATIONS
Treatment of perennial allergic rhinitis, seasonal allergic rhinitis, and chronic idiophatic urticaria.
PHARMACOLOGY
Adults and childres over 12 years: 1 tablet (10 mg) daily. At present, there are indufficient
clinical data to recommend the use of cetirizine in children under 12 years. At present. There are
no data which suggest that the dose needs to be reduced in elderly patients. In patients with renal
indufficiency, dosage should be reduced to ½ tablet daily.
Studies in healthy volunteers at 20 and 25 mg/day have not revealed affect on alertness or
reaction time; however, patients are advised not to exceed the recommended dose if driving or
operating machinery.
Use in pregnancy: no adverse effects have been reported from animal studies. There has been
little or no use of cetirizine in pregnancy. As with other drugs, the use of cetirizine in pregnancy
should be avoided.
SIDE EFFECTS
There have been occasional reports of mild and transient side effects, e.g. headache, dizziness,
drowsiness, agitation, dry mouth, and gastrointestinal discomfort. If desired, the dose may be
taken as 5 mg in the morning and 5 mg in the evening. In some individuals, hypersensitivity
reactions including skin reactions and angiodema may develop.

DRUG INTERACTIONS
To date, there are no known interactions with other drugs. Studies with diazepam and cimetidine
have revealed no evidence of interactions. As with other antihistamines, it is advisable to avoid
excessive alcohol consumption.
