• Teaching points: Shapes (circle, square, triangle, star and rectangle)

• Aims: During this lesson, learners will be able to…

- Identify and name different shapes, while singing and listening to a song.
- Develop their creativity by using shapes to create a new picture.
- Activate prior knowledge (colours, numbers and general vocabulary) by describing
their pictures.
• Language focus:

LEXIS FUNCTION STRUCTURE PRONUNCIATION

• Teaching approach: The lesson is based on the Natural Approach, and organized through
the CBL and TPR procedures.

• Materials and resources: Shapes made with colour papers to present their names.
Cellphone and speaker to listen to the songs. Pictures of a house, a car, a bird and a tree
made with shapes, without colour, and individual shapes to paste on them. Copies of the
activities students have to develop (listening activity and for painting the new vocabulary).

 Pedagogical use of ICT in class: In this lesson, I will use three different songs. The first
two songs will be used to engage students, while the last song will be used to support the
exposure of the students to the teaching point and to practice new structures. They will
listen to a song to identify shapes and practice their names.

• Seating arrangement: As this group of students are in 1st grade, they should be sitting in
rows. However, I will start the lesson again in the main gallery of the school to make them
change the environment and sing the song with enough space to act it. Once they enter in
the classroom, I will invite them to sit on the floor to develop the first activity in group.

• Cooperative work: they will sing the songs and start the main activity all together,
collaborating in the creation of pictures with shapes. Then, they will continue working
individually in order to develop cognitive skills as they acquire new vocabulary (identifying
and counting shapes). It is still quite difficult to carry out cooperative or group work
activities at this age.

• Assessment: what will be assessed and how: I’ll check that students identify shapes by
encouraging them to listen, repeat and point shapes, and then listening and making a circle
around the shape they hear. They will also create some figures using shapes and they will
have to say what shapes they used, how many of them and what colour they are. In this
way, they will be able to develop listening and speaking skills in a meaningful way according
to their age and cognitive development. I’ll try to provide them with the necessary input to
encourage them to identify and produce the chunks of language I’m teaching.

Routine: 5’

Purpose: to start the lesson, get students into the mood for work, establish rapport.

I’ll get into the classroom with the students, since this is the first lesson of the day, and once
they are in their places, I’ll greet students saying:

“Hello children! How are you today?” EA: “Hello teacher!”

I’ll ask students to sit down well on their chairs and be ready to sing the usual welcome
song.

T: “Ok children, first of all we have to start saying… (I’ll wave my hand so they can say
“Hello”) S: “Hello”.

T: “Very good! So, let’s start with our song to say hello.”

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=teMU8dHLqSI

“Hey!
Hello, hello, how are you today?
I am happy, happy, happy.
Hello, hello, how are you today?
I am sad, sad, sad.
Hello, hello, how are you today?
I am hungry, I’m hungry today”

Warm-up 10’:

Purpose: to introduce the topic and the teaching points

I’ll invite students to make a queue to go outside again to the main gallery in order to sing
the song “Make a circle” and change their place of work to engage them in the new
activity. I’ll review shapes using the same pictures I used last class.

Ok! Now, you’re going to STAND UP (I’ll move my hands to show them what to do) and
make a line to go outside. I’m going to count until 10 to be ready. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 and
10. Let’s go!”

Once they are outside, I’ll invite them to take their hands and be ready to sing the song:

“Now take your hands and let’s make a circle:”

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ALcL3MuU4xQ

“Make a circle big, big, big, small, small, small, big, big, big.
Make a circle small, small, small, hello, hello, hello.
Make a circle round and round, round and round, round and round.
Make a circle round and round, hello, hello, hello.
Make a circle up, up, up, down, down, down, up, up, up.
Make a circle down, down, down, now, sit down.”

Once students are sitting on the floor, I’ll show them the shapes we used the previous
class and I’ll ask them their names and colours.

T: “Ok children, do you remember what is it?”

S: “A circle”
T: “Very good, it’s a CIRCLE. And what colour is it?
S: “RED”
T: “Excellent”.
I’ll do the same with all the shapes
Then, I’ll present the new song. I’ll explain the students that this boy is called John and that
he likes walking looking for shapes. After that. I’ll show them the pictures to sing the song:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zUfqgRtvaYQ

“Walking down the street, looking for shapes “ I see a square”

Shapes, shapes, shapes, what do you see?” “That’s right, a square”

“Walking down the street, looking for shapes “ I see a triangle”

Shapes, shapes, shapes, what do you see?” “That’s right, a triangle”

“Walking down the street, looking for shapes “ I see a circle”

Shapes, shapes, shapes, what do you see?” “That’s right, a circle”
“Walking down the street, looking for shapes “ I see a rectangle”
Shapes, shapes, shapes, what do you see?” “That’s right, a rectangle”

“Walking down the street, looking for shapes “ I see a star”

Shapes, shapes, shapes, what do you see?” “That’s right, a star”

“Walking down the street, looking for shapes. Shapes, shapes, shapes, what do you see?”

“I saw a square, a triangle, a circle, a rectangle and a star”

“la, la, lalala, la lala la”

I’ll stamp my feet on the floor when the song says “walking down the street” and I’ll put my
hand over my eyes when it says “looking for shapes”. In that way, we will sing and act the
song at the same time. We will listen to them twice in order to practice it.

Transition: I’ll invite them to stand up, make a queue and come back to the classroom to
continue working with shapes, but sitting on the floor. “Let’s go to the classroom and sit
down in front of the floor”.

Presentation 5’:

Purpose: to further expose the learners to the target language, to identify shapes and
colours and to name new objects.

Now, I’ll show them four different pictures of a HOUSE, a TREE, a CAR and a BIRD made with
shapes (black and white). And I’ll ask students what shapes they see in each picture.

T: Look at this. This is a HOUSE. What is it?

S: A HOUSE!
T: Good! And what shapes do you see here? (I’ll start pointing each shape, and I’ll do the
same with the four pictures)
After that, I’ll invite different students to go to the board and put the colour shapes on the
correct place over the pictures. They will have to say the shape and the colour.
Transition: I’ll invite students to stand up and sit on their chairs to work with their
notebooks “Let’s stand up and sit down on your chairs”.

Development 15’:
 Activity 1 - 5’:

Purpose: this and the next activities are aimed at fostering contextualized practice of the
teaching points.

Listening activity: I’ll give students an activity to listen to an audio and circle the correct
the shape. They can paint the shape they circle.

T: “Now, we’re going to listen and circle the correct shape. Pay attention to the numbers”

 Activity 2 - 10’:

I’ll give them two small shapes so they can use them to create one of the pictures of the
board. They will have to use the shapes I give them and draw the missing parts in their
notebooks (they are all red).

T: “Now, open your red notebook. I’ll give you some shapes to create your own picture. What
will you do? A house? A tree? A car? Or a bird? (I’ll point them at the same time I mention
them).
Closure 5’:

I’ll point at the house, the bird, the tree and the car and I’ll say their names encouraging
students to repeat. Then I’ll ask them what shapes they see.

T: “Here we have a HOUSE, what is it?

S: “A house”
T: Great, a HOUSE, and what shapes do you see?
S: …
We will finish with the same song as always.
T: Excellent job!! You did it! But now, it’s time to finish. I’m going to count until 10 to pack
your things and be ready to sing our song.”
“Goodbye my friends,
good bye my friends,
I say goodbye
Every day.”
Students have to finish the song and sit down on their chairs.
T: “Goodbye children”
S: “Goodbye teacher”
