What is HIV?
Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV)
attacks the body’s immune system
CD4 lymphocytes (a.k.a. T-cells)

responsible for fighting off infection

HIV destroys a great amount of these

cells which makes it difficult for the
body to fight off infections and
diseases.

What is HIV?
The virus uses a protein in the cell to
make a copy of itself and then kills
the cell.
This process can go on for at least 10
years with the host experiencing no
symptoms.
The body’s immune system then
becomes very weak and vulnerable
to opportunistic infections and
other types of uncommon diseases
HIV Transmission
1. Sexual Transmission
a. Unprotected sex
2. Perinatal Transmission
a. Pregnancy
b. Childbirth
c. Breastfeeding
3. Blood Transmission

Origin of HIV
Source: A type of chimpanzee found
in Central Africa
Simian Immunodeficiency Virus (SIV)

Transmitted to humans when these

chimpanzees were hunted and
humans came in contact with their
infected blood
Spread across Africa then eventually
to other parts of the world

Stage 1: Acute HIV infection
First 2-4 weeks a person starts to experience flu-like
symptoms

body’s natural response to infection

Highly contagious

Infected persons are often unaware that they are

infected by the virus

Stage 2: Clinical Latency
(HIV Inactivity or Dormancy)
HIV is still active and reproducing
This stage may last for decades
At the end of this stage, HIV count goes up and
CD4 cell count goes down
Start of transition to final stage - AIDS.

Stage 3: Acquired
Immunodeficiency Syndrome
(AIDS)
CD4 cells drop to 200 cells per cubic millimeter of
blood or acquires any of the several
opportunistic illnesses or cancers
Opportunistic infections - take advantage of the weak
immune system of the host body
High loads of the virus and are severely contagious
