SAFETY CONSIDERATIONS

GENERAL
This manual contains information, cautions, and warnings which must be followed by the service person
to ensure safe operation and to retain the equipment in a safe condition.

SAFETY WARNINGS

BEFORE SWITCHING ON THE EQUIPMENT, its protective earth terminals must be connected to the
protective conductor of the (mains) power cord or the station earth. The mains plug shall only be inserted
in a socket outlet provided with a protective earth contact. The protective action must not be negated by
the use of an extension cord (power cable) without a protective conductor (grounding).

Make sure that only fuses with the required rated current and of the specified type (normal blow, time
delay, etc.) are used for replacement. The use of repaired fuses and the short-circuiting of fuse holders
must be avoided.

Whenever it is likely that the protection offered by fuses has been impaired, the equipment must be
made inoperative and be secured against any unintended operation.

GROUNDING
Any interruption of the protective (grounding) conductor (inside the equipment) or disconnecting the
protective earth terminal is likely to make this equipment dangerous. Intentional interruption is prohibited.

HIGH VOLTAGE

1. Introduction
This manual provides basic and detailed technical information for the correct operation
of the OSA 5548B SASE.
It describes the hardware itself, summarises the overall equipment concept and theory
of operation and provides information related to operation and maintenance.

1.1. Documentation Structure

The manual is divided into two main parts:
- OPERATING (this portion)
- TECHNICAL (located at the end of this manual)

1.1.1. Operating Portion

The Operating portion provides information on the overall equipment. I also
includes general specifications, installation, operation, fault finding and
maintenance.

1.1.2. Technical Portion

The Technical portion provides detailed information on all plug-in modules which
can be fitted into the OSA 5548B SASE.
The specifications, detailed description of operation, maintenance, adjustment
procedures and circuit diagrams are also included.

1.2. Optional expansion/upgrades

In order to minimise documentation changes, the drawings contained in this
manual show the equipment’s full configuration. Therefore, when module
upgrades are made at a later date, the user will already have all the necessary
documentation.

1.3. Addendum
Always check if there is an addendum at the beginning of the manuals and read
it before proceeding with the main part of the manual. The addendum will
highlight any departure of the hardware from the descriptive text or drawings and
give additional technical data which was not available when the original manual
was compiled.

1.4. Certification
All modules are tested according to well-defined procedures. Appropriate testing
and inspection also takes place at the component, board, equipment and system
levels. Oscilloquartz’s is certified to ISO 9001. Oscilloquartz is also certified by
the Swiss Office of Metrology as an accredited laboratory for time and
frequency. The company maintains in-house cesium standards that are
compared continuously to UTC. Before any equipment is released, it must satisfy
the relevant tests and inspection schedules. The equipment is then issued with a
"Certificate of Conformance" that guarantees its conformance with the relevant
performance criteria.

2.2.2. Functional description

2.2.2.1. Input Interface Units (IIU)

The OSA 5548B SASE can be equipped with up to six Input Interface Units
(IIUs). The IIUs provide the required interfaces to the external synchronization
references. The IIUs have dual outputs which are cross-fed to redundant Input
Line Selector (ILS) modules.

2.2.2.2. Input Line Selectors (ILS)

The function of the ILS is to select one of the IIU outputs and to forward the
selected signal to the two TOM modules. Thus, the ILS effectively selects one of
the input references. The ILSs can operate in several selection modes:
AUTOMATIC: the input is selected automatically by the ILS according to a
priority table.
MANUAL: the input is selected manually by the user and remains
selected as long as the input is valid
FORCED: the input is selected manually by the user and remains
selected no matter whether the input is valid or not.
The ILSs operate in a 1+1 protected mode (i.e. warm standby). The outputs from
ILS channel 1 and ILS channel 2 are joined together using passive combiners .
Normally, the output from ILS channel 1 is active and the output from ILS
channel 2 is inactive. If ILS channel 1 has failed or is removed, then ILS channel
2 automatically resumes operation. Switch-over between ILS channel 1 and
channel 2 has a negligible effect on the synchronization outputs of the OSA
5548B SASE.

2.2.2.3. Tracking Oscillator and Oscillator Modules

The outputs of the ILSs (through passive combiners) are fed to the Tracking
Oscillator Modules (TOM), channels 1 & 2 respectively.
The TOM contains a phase comparator and frequency dividers. It forms a Digital
Phase Locked Loop (D-PLL) with the Ovenised Crystal Quartz Oscillator
(OCXO). The TOM dynamically adjusts the output phase and frequency of the
oscillator to follow the phase and frequency of the selected synchronization
input. However, since the loop time constant (τLOOP) of the D-PLL is very large,
the jitter present on the synchronization input is attenuated. Additionally, the D-
PLL will not lock onto an input that exceeds the maximum allowable phase and
frequency tolerances. If all the synchronization inputs are bad, then the OCXO
enters hold-over mode (frequency memorised to the previously good
synchronization input).
The OSA 5548B SASE can be equipped with either dual Oven Controlled
Crystal Oscillator (OCXO) modules or dual 'Boîtier Vieillissement Amélioré'
(BVA) oscillator modules. Both types of oscillators exceed the requirements of
ITU-T G.812 Transit Node Clock (TNC), ITU-T G.812 Local Node Clock (LNC),
ITU-T G.812 type I and type III clocks, and ETSI 300 462-4 slave clock. The BVA
oscillator fully meets the ITU-U type II clock specification.

Author: OSA Revision: K Last Up-date: 20.05.2008 Creation: 30.05.97
2.2.2.4. Phase-Stepper Switches
The outputs of oscillator modules 1 & 2 are fed to the Phase Stepper Switches
(PSSs) in channels 1 & 2, respectively.
The PSS contains a phase comparator, a precision phase adjustment circuit and
a fast electronic switch. The standby PSS measures the phase difference
between its output and the output from the working PSS, and then adjusts its
output to phase align with the output of the working PSS. Normally, only the
output of the working channel PSS is active and the output of the standby PSS is
inactive. If either the TOM, oscillator module, or working PSS has failed or is
removed, then the standby PSS would assume operation. The switch-over
between PSSs has a negligible effect on the synchronization outputs of the OSA
5548B SASE.

2.2.2.5. Output Interface Units (OIU)

The outputs from PSS channels 1 & 2 are joined together by a passive combiner,
and the signal is then fanned out by a number of passive splitters. Each splitter
output feeds an Output Interface Unit (OIU). Two of the splitter outputs are used
to drive an optional SDU, and another splitter output is fed back to the IIUs as an
internal reference signal for the measurement of TIE.
The OSA 5548B SASE can be equipped with up to eight OIUs. The OIUs
provide the required interfaces to the external systems. There is a number of
OIU types that can be fitted in the OSA 5548B SASE.
Some OIU pairs are internally connected together to provide 1+1 protected
outputs, as required for the different versions of output wiring.
Different output connector types are available. Output impedance is either 75
Ohm unbalanced or 120 Ohm balanced. Output connector type and output
impedance are determined by field-exchangeable Output Connector Tiles.

2.2.2.6. Re-Timing Units (RTU)
A Re-Timing Unit (RTU) synchronises a traffic signal based upon the
synchronization signal from the OSA 5548B SASE. Each channel in the RTU
has a re-timing buffer holding two traffic frames. Each RTU provides re-timing
of up to 8 channels.
Output connector type and output impedance are determined by field-
exchangeable Output Connector Tiles (RTU cards require specially designed
connector tiles, including by-pass relays). Different output connector types are
available. Output impedance is either 75 Ohm unbalanced or 100/120 Ohm
balanced.
The RTU takes up one of the slots utilised for an Output Interface Unit.

If the re-timing buffer overflows, controlled slips are applied to the traffic
signals. Slips caused in the internal buffer can be monitored using a customer-
configured via the Local Manager or the SyncView Management software. Via
the management system, the operator has the possibility to set thresholds for
when (in terms of slips per time unit) alarms shall be rose.
Important: For maximum security, the traffic signals are passed through to
ensure that traffic is not lost due to RTU card removal, card fault or loss of
power in the equipment. This is ensured by the by-pass relays in the RTU
connector tile set.

2.2.2.7. Monitoring & Alarms Controller (MAC) & Embedded System Manager (ESM)
The Monitoring and Alarms Controller (MAC) concentrates the alarms from all
modules within the OSA 5548B SASE. It provides front panel LED indications,
relay contacts alarm outputs for in-station monitoring, and an RS-232C interface
for external control using a local terminal.
The OSA 5548B SASE can be fitted with an optional Embedded System
Manager (ESM) to provide comprehensive management features : gateway to
SyncView™ (Oscilloquartz’s management system), enhanced synchronization
input measurement; and other functions. There are three ESM versions to
provide X.25, ISDN or Ethernet Local Area Network (LAN) interface to
SyncView™.
Failure or removal of the MAC or ESM would only freeze the functions provided
by these units. The performance of the synchronization outputs is unaffected. i.e.
all the selected synchronization outputs would still be active, with the same
quality as before.

2.2.2.8. Power Supply Units (PSU)

The Power Supply Units (PSU) 1 & 2 operate in a 1+1 protected mode. Failure
or removal of a PSU has no effect on the synchronization outputs of the OSA

2.4. Front Panel layout / Equipment configuration:

Position Designation Function

A1 to A6 Input Interface Units 'IIU' Condition the external reference signals (up to 6) and
forward them to the ILS modules. GPS Receivers can
also be used as input interfaces (up to 2).
A7 to A14 Output Interface Units 'OIU' Provide the required user outputs and are driven by the
'active' Channel.
A15 Monitoring and Alarms Centralises all the alarms produced by the other
Controller 'MAC' modules in the chassis.
A16, A17 Power Supply Units 'PSU' Convert the voltage of the external power supply to the
internal voltage. In order to ensure the required
reliability, the two PSU work in a redundant fashion
(primary and secondary).
A18, A19 Input Line Selectors 'ILS' Selects one of the available inputs based on different
criteria and forwards it to both TOM modules for
synchronization purposes.
A20, A25 Tracking Oscillator Modules Digital PLL Filter used to lock the associated oscillator
'TOM' module to the selected input reference
(TOM A20 → OM A21, TOM A25 → OM A24)
A21, A24 Oscillator Modules 'OM' The heart of the equipment, these modules are
normally locked to the selected input reference by
means of the associated TOM and provide highly
stable outputs in holdover mode.
(OM A21 → TOM A20, OM A24 → TOM A25)
A22, A23 Phase-Stepper Switches 'PSS' Provide phase coherence and automatic selection of
the best between the two signals generated by the two
Oscillator Modules.
A26 Embedded System Manager Interface to the management system SyncView™ (X.25,
'ESM' ISDN or Ethernet), storage of measurement data and
many other functions.

2.6. Plug-in modules

2.6.1. Input Interface Unit "IIU Line Receiver with Measurement"

[Option for slots A1 to A6]
Each "IIU Line Receiver with Measurement" terminates a reference line,
conditions the reference signal and forwards it to the two ILS modules. This IIU
accepts and automatically converts to 2.048 MHz, any of the following
frequencies (automatic detection): 64 kHz, 1.0 MHz, 1.544 MHz, 2.048 MHz, 5.0
MHz and 10.0 MHz. It also monitors the reference signal and transmits an alarm
signal to the MAC module, when the signal level is out of specification or when
the IIU module has a failure. The "IIU Line Receiver with Phase Measurement"
also measures the TIE of the input signal relative to the output of the OSA
5548B SASE's active internal oscillator. The measured TIE values are
transmitted to the ESM module for further processing.

Text LED Indication

OP

2.6.2. Input Interface Unit "IIU 2.048 Mbit/s G.703-6 with Measurement"
[Option for slots A1 to A6]
Each "IIU 2.048 Mbit/s G.703-6 with Measurement" terminates a G.703-6
reference line, conditions the reference signal and forwards it to the two ILS
modules. It extracts the clock signal and detects AIS alarms. It can also extract
other information from the HDB3 signal, such as FA and ER alarms. Furthermore
it is possible to detect the states of bits 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8 in time slot 0. This IIU
also monitors the reference signal and transmits an alarm signal to the MAC
module, when the signal level is out of specification or when the IIU module has
a failure. The module also measures the TIE of the input signal relative to the
output of the OSA 5548B SASE's active internal oscillator. The measured TIE
values are transmitted to the ESM module for further processing.

2.6.17.Input Line Selector Module 'ILS' (slots A18 and A19)
The 'ILS' module selects one of the available inputs, according to different
criteria. It can operate in several modes:

• AUTOMATIC: the input is selected automatically by the ILS according to a

priority table.
• MANUAL: the input is selected manually by the user and remains
selected as long as the input is valid
• FORCED: the input is selected manually by the user and remains
selected no matter whether the input is valid or not.

By using the appropriate commands, the selection mode can be set by software.
In order to ensure the required reliability, the ILSs are duplicated. This means
that, while one module is operating, the other one stays in stand-by mode. When
a failure occurs, the switching between modules happens automatically.

2.6.18.Tracking Oscillator Module 'TOM' (slots A20 and A25)
The 'TOM', together with its associated Oscillator Module 'OM', forms a digital
phase-lock loop. The time constant of the loop is programmable in the range of
100 to 100,000 seconds. When locked to an input reference signal, the 'TOM'
regenerates the selected input reference and attenuates jitter and wander on this
reference. When no valid input reference is available, the 'TOM'/'OM' enter
holdover mode and holds its output frequency to the frequency that was
available just before the loss of the input. In order to ensure the required
reliability, two 'TOMs' are configured in a redundant manner.

3.7. Connecting the Input References
Depending on the configuration of the SASE 5548B, there can be up to six input
lines that need to be connected to the input interface units. These need to be
connected in accordance with the user’s network plan and/or wiring schedules.

3.7.1. INHIBIT Function

Each Input Interface Unit has two digital HCMOS-compatible inputs called
INHIBIT 1 and INHIBIT 2. Each of these inputs inhibits the function of the
relevant input module if the logic level is 1. An inhibited input cannot be selected
as a reference input by the ILS. Since the INHIBIT inputs feature a pull-up
resistor, their logic level is 1, if they are not connected to a digital signal source.
If the INHIBIT inputs are not used, they must be tied to ground externally.
This is done by connecting the pre-wired Sub-D type connector plugs provided
with the equipment to the INH connectors described below.

4. Configuring the Unit
To configure the OSA 5548B SASE the following main parameters need to be set:
• Priorities of the incoming reference signals
These parameters are stored and processed by the ILS Modules.
The priorities of the input references should be determined in accordance with the
user’s synchronization network plan.
• Servo loop time constant.
This parameter is stored and processed by the TOM Modules.
Its target value depends on the characteristics of the local oscillator and the
incoming reference. The BVA 8695 oscillator (with very low ageing BVA quartz
crystal), allows the user to set a higher loop time constant than with the 8665
oscillator.
• Alarm detection limits on phase time (XINMAX) and fractional frequency offset
(YINMAX).
These parameters are stored and processed by the TOM Modules.
Their values determine the accepted quality range of the incoming reference. When
out of limits, the reference is automatically rejected by the ILS module. The values
depend solely on the quality of the reference signal and must be chosen by the user.
It is important to note that the limits should only be programmed when the system's
servo loop is locked.
-9
Indeed, if one chooses a Yinmax of say 10 when the system is in hold-over mode
(loop not locked to the reference), the oscillator's ageing drift will reach this value
after a couple of days. If this is the case, a reference signal of good quality and
accurate frequency will be rejected, because the deviation Yoscillator - Yreference
will have exceeded the limit of 10-9.

4.2. Configuring Procedure if the unit is equipped with an ESM
If the OSA 5548B SASE is equipped with an ESM, then the ILS and the TOM modules
can be configured:

4.3.2. Configuring the ILS's Modules
If the OSA 5548B SASE is not equipped with an ESM, the commands are sent to the
ILS modules via the 'RS-232C' port on the connector panel.
For redundancy, the equipment contains two ILS modules (A18 and A19).
• To configure the ILS modules use the command set described in the ILS
Operating Manual in the Technical part of this document.
• Please note that all messages sent to and from the ILSs are preceded by the
character '#'.
• The ILS modules are configured via their RS-232C ports, which are
connected internally to the MAC's communication port no. 3. To start
communicating, first send the following command:

$COM=3<LF><ETX>

This command instructs the MAC to select the appropriate internal communication port
and thus allow the user to send or receive messages from the ILS modules.

• A priority value ranging from 1 to 6 must be assigned to each of the input

interface modules and GPS-I modules. 1 is the highest priority. All inputs must
have different priorities. If the SASE is equipped with less than 6 input
interfaces, the inputs that are not equipped get the lowest priorities
(e.g. priority 6).

The following commands are used to modify the operating mode and priority
table:

#MODE=AUTOMATIC or FORCED or MANUAL

#PRI=prior-IN1, prior-IN2, prior-IN3, prior-IN4, prior-IN5, prior-IN6

4.3.3. Configuring the Tracking Oscillator Modules (TOM)
If the OSA 5548B SASE is not equipped with an ESM, the commands are sent to the
TOMs via the 'RS-232C' port on the connector panel.
For redundancy, the unit contains two TOM modules (A20 and A25). The TOM modules
are configured via their internal RS-232C ports. The first TOM (module A20) is
connected to the MAC's communication port number 1 and the second TOM (module
A25) is connected to the MAC's communication port number 2.
• To configure the TOMs use the command set described in the TOM Operating
Manual in the Technical part of this document.
• To communicate with the first TOM (A20), send the command:

$COM=1<LF><ETX>

• To communicate with the second TOM (A25), send the command:

$COM=2<LF><ETX>

These commands instruct the MAC to select the appropriate internal communication
port and thus allow the user to send or receive messages from the TOMs.

Setting the loop time constant:

• The loop time constant is very important for the correct functioning of the
TOM module. After sending the command to set a value for the loop time
constant, the user is prompted to confirm the entry in order to prevent
unwanted programming errors:
TAU=xxx Command
ARE YOUR SURE (Y/N)? Response. Type Y if the value is correct.

Setting the XINMAX and YINMAX values:

• The following commands are used to modify the parameters Xinmax and
Yinmax:

XINMAX=xxx
YINMAX=xxx

5.3.2. Operations
Communication with the unit is done using the TTY protocol and is processed by the
MAC Alarms Module (A15).

All characters are transmitted in ASCII format (0 to 127) and each line is terminated by
a 'LF' (0AH) character. Messages generated by the MAC are terminated with the
character ETX (03H). The MAC will accept commands terminated with either 'LF' (0AH)
or 'CR''LF' (0DH) (0AH). Although not necessary, commands sent to the MAC can be
terminated with 'ETX' (03H).

All messages sent to or from the MAC are prefixed by the character '$'. Messages
without '$' are sent to or from those modules within the equipment which are connected
to the internal RS-232C ports (e.g. TOM and ILS modules). To communicate with these
modules, select the appropriate communication port number using the command
$COM=n (1≤n≤4). The MAC will then enable bi-directional communication and adapt
the communication parameters accordingly.

To start communicating with the TOM modules (A20 and A25), send the command:
$COM=1<LF><ETX> for the first TOM (A20)
or $COM=2<LF><ETX> for the second TOM (A25)

To start communicating with the ILS Modules (A18 and A19), send the command:
$COM=3<LF><ETX>

These commands instruct the MAC to select the appropriate internal communication
port and thus allow the user to send or receive messages from the relevant modules.
Please refer to the MAC, TOM and ILS Operating Manuals for the command set, in the
Technical part of this document.

6.6. Checking the Local RS-232C Port of the ESM module
If the OSA 5548B SASE is equipped with an ESM, the RS-232C port on this
module’s front panel provides the local RS-232C port. For managing the OSA
5548B SASE over this port, one needs to connect it to an IBM-compatible PC
loaded with the Local Manager (LM) application. Please refer to the separate LM
Operating Manual. If this software is not available, one can communicate with
the ESM with a terminal emulator running on an IBM-compatible PC. A detailed
description of the MML commands is provided in the LM User Guide. It should
be noted that this method is not practical if one wants to take full advantage of
all the management features of the ESM. However, it does allow the user to
perform a quick functional check of the ESM.

Procedure:
y Connect an IBM-compatible PC to the RS-232C port on the front panel of the
ESM.
y Set the parameters to 9600 baud, 8 characters, 1 stop bit, no parity
y With a terminal emulator, execute the sequence of instructions given in the
table below. Check the response. If the response is as indicated below, this
means that the communication with the ESM is working properly.

7.2. Inputs Management

Input Selection
Input Validation Input validation criteria depend on input signal type. See
paragraph on Input Interface Units.
Input Selection Modes Four operating modes are available :

a) Automatic: the input is selected according to a priority

table
b) Manual: the input is selected manually by the user,
and remains selected as long as the input is
valid
c) Forced: the input is selected manually by the user,
and remains selected whether the input is
valid or not
d) Majority
Decision: the input selection is based on the phase
measurements made on each input; if the
frequency offset of an input exceeds a pre-
defined limit relative to the majority, then
the input is rejected; Majority Decision
mode requires the ESM.

Input selection mode, input priority table, and majority

thresholds are selectable via RS-232C using a local terminal
or via SyncView™.
Max. Output Phase Change after Phase build-out function cancels phase offsets between
Input Changeover inputs.
Output phase change: typically < 2 ns; exact value depends
on τloop and Oscillator Module type.
IIU's PHASE MEASUREMENT
Overview Continuous phase measurement performed independently
on each input interface unit, in real time. Measurements are
non-intrusive.
The phase measurement function requires the ESM.
Measurement Range Measurement range is ± 50 μs, resolution is 1 ns.
Threshold is programmable via the equipment’s local
interface (ESM 'RS-232C') or SyncView™.
(4)
Measurement Representation MRTIE, TDEV and yavg (average fractional frequency)
graphs can be displayed every 15 minutes, eight hours and
24 hours - locally using a PC with SyncView™ Local Manager
or remotely from SyncView™ management system.
(4)
Alarming Alarm thresholds for MRTIE, TDEV and yavg are
programmable via Local Manager or SyncView™
management system.. If a threshold is exceeded, the OSA
5548B SASE will send a message to the Local Manager or
to SyncView™.
Storage of Measurement Data (4) Measurement data is stored in the ESM for 45 minutes using
1 second sampling time, 1 day using 32 seconds sampling
time, 3 days using 96 seconds sampling time.
