How can LMS/CMS Help Facilitate Digital Data Collection and Assessment in North Carolina
The North Carolina Digital Competencies for Classroom Teachers has outlined that
teachers must integrate technology into their classrooms. In this short reflection paper, I will
discuss how implementing learning management systems and course management systems in the
classroom can fulfill the competency. With the correct training and research, any educator can
use LMS/CMS in the classroom effectively.
The second competency is to use performance data and digital tools to empower student
metacognition for self-assessment & self-monitoring their own learning progress. Students need
to be able to self-identify their weak areas and needed areas to study. Students are able to gain
feedback from the teacher after the completion of a test. This feedback is given through the
LMS/CMS that the teacher uses, like Google Forms or SchoolNet. In Law & Justice an
assessment review is completed after each assessment. Due to the instant results from SchoolNet
and Google Forms, I am able to review units with students. This allows the students to know the
areas they are weak in and to make a study plan for future assessments.
The third competency is to utilize multiple and varied forms of assessment including
examples of student work products. Students can create a digital portfolio through a web hosting
site that is continuously ongoing throughout the course to assess their knowledge. The portfolio
needs to be public to allow feedback from teacher(s) and other student(s). Google Classroom
can also be used to allow students to assess one another’s work. In my Law & Justice class, I
will post an assignment on Google Classroom and have the students complete the assignment,
Chrissy Dobie
for example, a short presentation on DUI’s. After the completion of the assignment, students
review and critique their classmates work and have a question and answer session.
The use of LMS/CMS is beneficial in the classroom and help engage the student. With
technology use in the classroom being a North Carolina competency, it is ideal for teachers to
learn engaging ways to implement technology in several areas in their curriculum. This can be
hard and overwhelming for teachers, but can be done. Technology can be easily facilitated in the
classroom if training and the LMS/CMS are used to their fullest potential.
