THE VIOLENT NATURE OF FILIPINOS PLAYING MOBILE LEGENDS
CHAPTER I
THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND
This chapter will provide the readers a glance of the entire contents of this
research work and how the researchers will solve the problem.

Rationale
Mobile games are games designed for mobile devices, such as smartphones,
feature phones, pocket PCs, personal digital assistants (PDA), tablet PCs and
portable media players. Mobile games range from basic (like Snake on older Nokia
phones) to sophisticated (3D and augmented reality games).
Today’s mobile phones particularly smartphones have a wide range of connectivity
features, including infrared, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and 3G. These technologies facilitate
wireless multiplayer games with two or more players.
Mobile games are usually downloaded from an app store as well as from mobile
operator's portals, but in some cases are also preloaded in the handheld devices by
the OEM or by the mobile operator. When you hear about the effect of mobile
games you tend to think about the negative effects like the fact they are causing in
behavior. We are surrounded by people who prefer to spend time alone with their
mobile phones instead of having quality time to their friends and families. But
think of it, playing mobile games have a positive effects to the players especially in
mobile legends players. So the researchers came up to this study to show the
violent nature of Filipinos playing mobile legends. Adding a little insight; “Mobile
Legends: Bang Bang” is a mobile MOBA (5 versus 5 arena). Unlike games such as
DOTA2 or League of Legends (LOL), you will only need a compatible mobile phone
to run the game. The game was developed by Moonton, a gaming developer
located at Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, with a company life nine months. To boot, this is
only Moonton’s only video game developed and released, available for both
android and iOS.
According to prioridata.com, Mobile Legends has the following user statistics:
1. In terms of downloads across all platforms, Mobile Legends: Bang Bang has a
total download of 31.60 million.
2. Video game revenues since inception has breached the $5.30 million
3. For the month of March, it earned $874.4 thousand, while the Philippines
became the top country by number of downloads with 938.70 thousand user-
downloads.

Statement of the Problem

“Looking into the verbally abusive and violent nature of Filipino gamers
playing the mobile game “Mobile Legends,” to explore solutions for the prevention
of further mental and physical violence.”

Purpose and Description

The purpose of the study is to shed light on why there is a culture of verbal
abuse occurring in Filipino groups playing Mobile Legends, regardless of age. The
verbal abuse may pertain to the following; insults, name-calling, cursing, bullying
and loud violent reactions.
We seek to identify the root cause of the verbal violence when playing
games like Mobile Legends, to be aware of what warrants the abusive culture and
to hopefully prevent what usually leads to physical violence and mental trauma
caused by the phenomenon.

Objectives
- To observe and identify some factors that show there is a culture of verbal
abuse during games in the Filipino culture.
- To understand underlying factors that caused the emergence of the violent
behaviors.
- To explore the effects of the verbal abuse, if they lead to physical violence or
if they cause harm to the people involved.
- To find solutions to avoid the violence and aid other research and industries
who seek to make action resolve the problem.
-
Importance of the Study
This study was conducted to determine the outlook of Filipinos pertaining to
their aggressive and violent nature while playing Mobile Legends. The result of this
study is beneficial to the players of Mobile Legends, students, and future
researchers.
The researchers believed that the result of the study would be a great
benefaction specifically to the following:
The PLAYERS OF MOBILE LEGENDS, the study would help develop and
enlighten their minds on the effects of verbal abuse while playing mobile legends.
The STUDENTS, the study may serve as an eye opener to appraise the need
of removing violence during on game.
The FUTURE RESEARCHERS, the study will be a basis and common ground for
further studies on the violent nature of Filipinos playing Mobile Legends or during
competitive gaming events.

Scope and Limitations

This study is primarily focused on the assessment of violent behaviors being
performed by common players of the mobile game “Mobile Legends”. The
researchers aim to describe the violent behaviors or verbal abuse where they may
be categorized as cursing, screaming or shouting, making rude personal remarks,
or threatening violent acts, and “others”. This study will be conducted within the
areas of Quezon Ave., Timog Ave., and Kamuning Rd. This study is limited to
observing violent reactions among players and getting the qualitative opinion of
participants on the subject. The study will not dwell on the possible effects of
actual video games at large on the mental well-being and behavior, but rather on
the culture of verbal aggressiveness, competitiveness, and bullying during games in
the Philippines, particularly for the citizens of Manila today.
