I.

SETUP-

A. Company- Genesis Healthcare, the company has more than 450 centers across 30 states. The
company was established in 1985 with 9 centers. In 2015, Genesis completed its previously
announced combination with Skilled Healthcare Group, Inc. The combination of the two companies
created one of the largest post-acute care providers in the country, with more than 500 skilled
nursing centers in 34 states. I had a chance to interview Mrs. Bardwell, an HR professional, who
works at Cartersville Heights (one of Genesis’ branch) located in Cartersville, Georgia. Cartersville
Heights is a 118-bed skilled nursing and rehabilitation center, and it has total 81 employees.

B. HR Department – Mrs. Bardwell is the only HR employee on staff at the center. Her main
functions are in recruitment, benefits administration, payroll processing, employee engagement and
retention, records management, new hire on boarding, and advisement.

 Education-Master’s in Extension Education

 What “sparked” you to pursue HR as a career? After working several years as a manager
in retail, Mrs. Bardwell fell in love with training and developing the employees as well as
coaching them in specific areas, and after seeing their strength, which is always an asset
to the company, to help their employees grow to a higher level. Mrs. Bardwell felt that
this was an area to pursue in HR and she started to love working with the employees.

2. Present

 Title-HR Manager

 Time in Position-Two years

 Progression at Company-Mrs. Bardwell can either be promoted to a district HR manager


to oversee 2 or more centers, move to the corporate level in an area of HR, or into
recruiting.

 Current Responsibilities-Work collaboratively with the Administrator Director of


Nursing, department heads, regional HR Director, and corporate support team to
develop a work environment and culture that is committed to the mission, vision and
care value of the company

3. Recruit

 Why HR? Because Mrs. Bardwell fell that she can make a significant contribution for the
company by preparing the workforce for changing times in a world of social media,
economic changes and generation differences. At the same time, she still maintains
some of the old values, standards of ethics, and integrity that has been lost.

 What makes you passionate about the field? Being an advocate for the employees
because so many don’t feel that they have a voice in the workplace. Also, the training of
employees to achieve the goals of the company.

 What do you see is HR's value to the individual and the company? The ability to identify
the best values between the employees and the company as well as individual strengths
that will help achieve desired goals and results for the company.

II. STATE OF HR

A. National

 What is going on nationally? There are a lot of economic issues and changes with the
economy and the laws that affect businesses by causing cutbacks and losses. All those things
affect the bottom line.

B. Organization

 What is providing the challenges currently in this organization?

 The company has challenges in maintaining a good quality nursing staff of CNAs due
to many of them wanting to further their education to become LPNs or RNs or those
that relocate or accept positions at other facilities.

 Also challenges with budgeting due to laws that affect revenue such as cutbacks in
Medicare, Medicaid, and change in the insurance industry.

IV. TRENDS OUTLOOK


 Basically, changes in the economic climate that continue to affect how businesses operate
that will cause a slow down in spending and expansion. Companies will continue to cut
spending, slash budgets, and cut back staffing.

V. ISSUE

 One issue is turnover in CNA (Certified Nursing Assistant) staff.

 The solution is to involve staff in the recruitment process by referring good quality people to
apply and reward them a bonus if hired.

 Also involving them in retention by asking for an incorporation their ideas.

 Also asking that everyone help with welcoming our new employees and making sure they
get adjusted to the workplace.
