Impact of Excessive usage of social networking sites (SNS) by students

Abstract

the purpose of this study is to identify effects of excessive usage of networking sites by students using the
web become more and more common, which has increased the numbers of people using social sites SNS
and created lots of problems. SNS have attracted millions of users and how this excessive usage has
impact on their academic performance. This paper also highlights on issues related health, academic
performance, addiction of sites, privacy and security issues. This study explores some negative impacts
and some recommendations. Current Era technological trends has been increased more rapidly and our
generation spend huge amount of time on net daily basis and they use smart phones laptops tablets e-
readers all these tools to actively engage on social networking such as chatting, blogging, online learning
online gaming researchers concluded excessive usage causes different problems regarding health
psychological anxiety depression etc. and wasting of time on irrelevant things that they not need.

1. Introduction

Online social networking is a type of virtual communication that allows connecting each other. Social
networking sites such as Facebook twitter Instagram whatsapp all are highly used as a social media
platforms. Users around the world, whether they are teens or college students share personal information
on Facebook. Most people disclose personal information on their profiles.(Aida, Samadi, & Gharleghi,
2014) Research on SNS and other social media found a paradox, a discrepancy between privacy concerns
and actual privacy settings by using social media also change the life of people. Almost the student of
school and college use face book i watsapp but in university level students use all type of social media
such as twitter, Facebook, snap chat they use for spending time for socializing themselves they want to
make themselves more socialize, Online social networking is a type of Virtual communication that allows
to connect with each other. Social networking sites email, instant messaging,video,and photo sharing sites
and comment posting are all tools that help people to communicate with each other.facbook users spend
about 6 hours and 30 mins on the site every month. These key features have raised significant privacy
concerns for individual users of these websites. Therefore social networking sites are less likely to have
their users best interest in mind when the disclosure of personal information. These sources are examined
in order to understand how the law is approaching the privacy issues surrounding social media including
“cyber crimes.in cybercrimes majority of cases involved young teenagers, mostly 13, 14, 15 years old
girls who are targeted by adults(Scholar & Thoene, 2012). social sites that once was thought to be helping
people across the world to making relationship can also damage the relationship and make a life
miserable.

Literature Review

This research shows that social media usage has increased in this era one of the most well-known social
media sites is face book today every person has account these sites currently boost up 800 million users
an over 50 present of active users logon these sites (Aida et al., 2014)) every person have a lot of friends
and they connect with each other mostly users assess the site through mobile device the philosopher
Alden research shows that in 2011 51 percent users are male where 49% are female so this research
shows that male peoples are more time spent in different web sites like face book messenger twitter and
watsapp and again Alden research shows that 20persent of users are between the age of 13 and seventeen
25 percent are between the age of 18 and 25, 26 percent are between the age of 26 and 34 and 27 percent
are over the age of 35 so over the age of 35 peoples are spent more time in different websites in other
hand many studies have supported the idea that a positive relationship between online products and sale
(Aida et al., 2014) the Researcher assists that the think which is favorable reviews sale batter then with
unfavorable products in 2009 (Scholar & Thoene, 2012)explore the personalities and motivate them who
used the social media they motivate them people use these sites with a positive thinking today every
person keep awareness about social media and we have information how it is better for us but
unfortunately our teenagers are spend more time in different websites. They give more time to this
websites they ignore their studies

Consumption patterns

In research shows that companies have also begin using social media as a way to better relation with users
according to (Loseke, 2017)companies can also utilize social media platforms to create personalized
experiences

Social media usage frequency

(Scholar & Thoene, 2012)the research on how college students in particular used websites in this study 92
college students recorded their websites usage in terms of time and asked the question why they use the
sites the majority of students spend a lot of hours in different websites in addition in this research females
had a large number of friends then males. the research also discovered that the students used this sites for
study purposes. They share their content with their friends according to international journal of business
and social science volume number 14 in this research shows that when we accept friend request from
strangers we don’t have any information about them we quickly accept friend request and start chatting
share our personal data this is the big mistake of user he easily make the way for the criminals they easily
hacked our accounts according to nelson on ling says mostly users spent seven hours a month on face
book after drugs and alcohol addiction the world is facing any new type of addiction is that social media
people take mobiles in their hands and used social media for unknown purposes like they write comments
and likes they waste their times.

Cyber bulling

A report by “daily mail” shows cyber bulling willful and repeated harmful activities through the use of
computer and electronic devices therefor cyber criminals clearly constitute as a violation of privacy
especially in face book and Myspace where people suffer from cyber bulling (Campus-, Campus,
Campus-, & Campus, n.d.)

How to remain save in SNS

 First of all change the profile privacy

 Don’t accept unknown friend request
 Don’t post very personal information on the profile
 Don’t post negative things about your life
 Don’t post your current location posting these information just like inviting criminals
 Make distance from illegal networks

1.2 Findings

I. In order to analyze this research question the relationship between several variable were
explore for both face book and twitter.
II. The question relating to differences between gender was examine using test for
independent samples to determine whether the difference in that women were statistically
significant at a significance level to 0.5.(Scholar & Thoene, 2012)
III. These test revealed that women are more likely to receive information about sales
promotions from companies on face book.
IV. The question was tested by examine the relationship between usage frequency was test
against six other variable number of friends number of companies like followed how
often receive correspond once from store.
V. Further analysis between variable was conducted using analysis of variance test at a
significance level of 0.5.(Scholar & Thoene, 2012)
VI. These relationship were tested using person correlation at a significance level 0.5
individual who frequently use face book are nor more likely receive correspondence from
a company that has been be friended however people are more likely to shop at store they
have network with on the site.(Misbah batool , Saqlain abbas , Nida zahra, Ejaz ud din,
Sabahat, n.d.)

Conclusion

From the above mentioned data usage of social media and their effects on students either positive
or negative has significance role in a life of student .It depends on the student how he uses the
social media, maybe he use for a positive or for a negative purpose . if he uses positively affect
he can be benefit but as a student he should use the social media for positive purpose from the
above research work, relationship between the exploring the Face book and twitter the ratio of
women is more than men .
