1.0 Design Philosophy

The structure is proposed for Construction of BSM/Govt office building at Bhubaneswar. This report
covers minimum design specifications, which will form the overall design philosophy to be adopted
in the structural design of the project.
The Structural Design Basis Report is prepared in reference with the relevant IS Codes and
Architectural drawings. The Building comprises of one Basements + Lower Ground +Upper Ground
+10 Upper floors+ Terrace. As per the soil report furnished to us, it is understood that the ground
water table is at 21m from existing ground level.
The Building is proposed to be designed as RCC structure with Post Tensioned slab. The office
space has primarily flat slab system with drop beams & columns suitably placed as per the design
intent. The shear walls are provided at lift/whenever required will increase the stability. The
foundation system is as per the soil consultant’s report and recommendations. The services areas are
planned to be constructed in conventional framed systems for duct provisions.
All designs shall strictly conform to the standards specified in clause 10.0

11.0 Temperature and Shrinkage effects

The dimensions of our building is 91x62m, 68x43m, 24x43m on the Basement, first 5 floors
and Tower area respectively. As per IS456 Cl 19.5.1 the maximum dimension of building is
limited to 45m due to temperature fluctuation, creep and shrinkage, so tower area is within the
limit. However, IS456 does not provide any explanations or methods to find out maximum
allowable dimensions of a building without expansion with respect to its geometry or stiffness.
American Concrete Institute provides separate code (ACI 224), which gives a detailed
explanation for finding out the maximum allowable dimensions of building without expansion
joint with respect to geometry and stiffness.

As per IMD maximum and minimum temperature in Bhubaneswar is 37.50 C (99.50 F) & 15.20
C (59.360 F). So difference in temp is taken as 22.3C (40.140 F). As per ACI 224-Joint in
concrete construction chapter-3 Figure 3.5 for a difference in temp 40.140 F the corresponding
maximum length without expansion joint shall be 500ft(150m) for rectangular configuration
with symmetrical stiffness. Hence the Basement and the above five floors canr be done without
expansion joints and no extra thermal loading.
