Reflection of a point on the axis and on the line 𝒚 = 𝒙
A reflection can be thought of as folding or "flipping" an object over the line of
reflection. • The original object is called the pre-image, and the reflection is called the image. • The image is usually labeled using a prime symbol, such as A'B'C'. • An object and its reflection have the same shape and size, but the figures face in opposite directions. The objects appear as if they are mirror reflections, with right and left reversed.
A reflection can be seen, for example, in water, a mirror, or in a shiny surface.
1. Reflection of a point on the 𝑥 axis
We will discuss here about reflection of a point in the x-axis. The line y = 0 means the x-axis. When you reflect a point across the x-axis, the x- coordinate remains the same, but the y-coordinate is transformed into its opposite (its sign is changed). Let P be a point whose coordinates are (x, y). specify reflection of the point (x,y) across the x-axis. answer : Clearly, P’ will be similarly situated on that side of X which is opposite to P. So, the y-coordinates of P’ will be – y while its x- coordinates will remain same as that of P. so we can conclude The reflection of the point (x,y) across the x-axis is the point (x,-y). 2. Reflection of a point on the 𝑦 axis We will discuss here about reflection of a point in the y-axis. The line x = 0 means the y-axis. When you reflect a point across the y-axis, the y- coordinate remains the same, but the x-coordinate is transformed into its opposite (its sign is changed). Let P be a point whose coordinates are (x, y). specify reflection of the point (x,y) across the y-axis. answer : Clearly, P’ will be similarly situated on that side of Y which is opposite to P. So, the x-coordinates of P’ will be – x while its y- coordinates will remain same as that of P. so we can conclude The reflection of the point (x,y) across the y-axis is the point (-x,y). 3. Reflection of a point on the 𝑦 = 𝑥 When you reflect a point across the line y = x, the x-coordinate and y- coordinate change places. If you reflect over the line y = -x, the x- coordinate and y-coordinate change places and are negated (the signs are changed).
so we can conclude The reflection of the point (x,y) across
the line y = x is the point (y, x). and The reflection of the point (x,y) across the line y = -x is the point (-y, -x).
Exercise
1. The point P whose coordinates are (9, 11) is mapped on to P’ when
reflected in the x-axis and then P’ is mapped onto P” when reflected in the y-axis. Find the coordinates of P”.
Solution:
Here P’ has the coordinates (9, -11).
When P’ is mapped on to P” by reflection in the y-axis, the coordinates of
P” become (-9, -11).
2. A point P is mapped onto P’ when reflected in the y-axis and P’ is mapped
onto P” when reflected in the x-axis. If the coordinates of P” are (-7, 4), find the coordinates of P.
Solution: Let the coordinates of P be (x, y). Then the coordinates of P’
are (-x, y). So, the coordinates of P” are (-x, -y).
According to the question, the coordinates of P” are (-7, 4). So, -x = -7 and –y = 4. Therefore, x = 7 and y = -4.
