3.0 Beam

The usual requirement for a beam design is to provide sufficient resistance to

bending moment. There are two types of restraining condition of beam;

i. Restrained beam
A beam where the compression flange is restrained against lateral deflection,
rotation and only vertical deflection exists.
ii. Unrestrained beam
The compression flange is not restrained from deflect laterally and rotate
about the plan of the section which is called lateral torsional buckling.

3.1 Beam Design Procedure

1. Determine the actions from slab.

i. Total Gk and Qk.
ii. Design load, w (UDL) = 1.35Gk + 1.5Qk
