-The reason is if one sea chest is clogged then we can put the other
sea chest (already cleaned sea chest) in service, now we can close
the clogged sea chest and clean it. After cleaning, this sea chest will
be purged and kept as standby.
Low sea chest will be used at high seas and during rough weather.
High sea chest will be used at shallow depth areas and during port
stays.

The main job is to remove the water from the lube oil and to
remove the generated sludge from the lube oil (due to the running of

Quick closing valves are provided only for fuel and lube oil
tanks as the oil will lead to fire hazard and not water.

Function of an incinerator on the ship-

To incinerate the oily rags and the carton boxes which are used to
bring the stores, spares and provisions. Along with this the main
purpose of incinerator is to burn the sludge generated onboard so as
to keep the sludge quantity onboard to a minimum.

Purpose of fresh water generator on board a ship-

To generate fresh water onboard so that there is no need to carry or
purchase the fresh water as per the voyage requirements. Since
there is no need to carry the fresh water as per the voyage
requirements the fresh water tanks can be smaller making room for
the cargo space which will earn revenue for the ship.

Oily water separator location and its purpose-

Oily water separator is situated in the bottom most platform near
the bilge tank. The purpose is to remove oil from the water to less
than 15ppm before pumping the water out.
Economizer and its location-
Economizer is a device that uses the waste heat from the main engine
exhaust or from the boiler flue to heat the feed water. It is an Energy
improving device that helps to reduce the cost of operation by fuel.
The economizer in Boiler tends to make the system more efficient.
In boilers, economizers are generally Heat Exchangers which are
designed to exchange heat with water.

It is located inside the flue gas duct near the exit region of the boiler’s
flue gas uptake.

Purpose of the auxiliary condenser?

Auxiliary condenser is used to condense all the steam into water.
 By what name is it referred most ships? What is the purpose of
an observation tank?
It is referred to as atmospheric condenser. The purpose of
observation tank is to make sure that the condensate which is going
to the hot well tank does not contain any oil due to the leaking
heating coils.

Function of Bilge pump is to transfer the bilges generated in the engine
room to the bilge tank. And also to pump out the contents of the bilge
tank to overboard through OWS.

Function of HO transfer pump is to transfer the heavy fuel oil from

bunker tanks to the HO settling tank.

 Exhaust manifold-It is the place where all the exhaust from individual
units comes and gets collected. Here the pressure of the exhaust gas is
made constant before going to the turbocharger.
Turbocharger-The heat energy is converted to mechanical work by
the expansion of the gases in the turbocharger turbine. The exhaust
gases rotates the turbine hence allowing the blower side impeller to
take suction of the atmospheric air.
Exhaust boiler-The remaining heat energy of the exhaust gases is sent
to the exhaust boiler where the heat energy of the exhaust gases is given
to the water of the boiler through heat transfer. The water gets
converted to steam which is used for heating purpose.
Silencer-It will remove the noise of the exhaust gas before sending
the exhaust gas into the atmosphere.
Funnel-The exhaust gas escapes to the atmosphere through the
funnel.

Advantages of central cooling System

 Low maintenance cost: As the system runs with fresh water,

the cleaning, maintenance and component replacement
reduces.
 Less corrosion: Since the sea water system is only in the
central part, the corrosion of pipes and valves decreases.
 Use of cheaper materials: Since the corrosion factor decreases,
expensive materials are not required for valves and pipelines.
  Constant temperature level maintained: Since the temperature
controlled is irrespective of sea water temperature, stable
temperature is maintained which helps in reducing
machinery wear down.
 Less wear of engine parts: Less wear of cylinder liner as the
jacket is maintained warm avoiding cold corrosion.
 Ideal for unmanned engine room: The greater reliability and
temperature controlling of the system offered by the central
cooling system makes it an ideal choice for unmanned engine
room

Why are chemicals required on a ship?

Chemicals are required for the treatment of LT Water, HT Water
and Boiler Water. So that the passage through which the water
passes through does not get corrosion because of which the material
does not fail. The water should have the right amount of chemical
reserves in order to protect the material from corrosion.

Why is a heater provided for the LO purifier?

In order to have a good separation of water and sludge from the
lube oil, the density difference to be increased. To increase the
density difference we heat the lube oil to 85 deg C for which we
need heater.

Explain the purpose of an incinerator.

The purpose of incinerator is to incinerate the waste oil or sludge
generated due to the operation of machineries. And also to burn the
garbage like oily rags and carton boxes (which is received while
purchasing spares, stores and provisions).
