Sony Europe Connectivity Guide

1
Version 2

HINTS AND TIPS

It is intended that this booklet provides you with a starting point for your connectivity enquiries.
However, owing to the huge number of connectivity variations that are possible, it is not feasible
to cover them all in this book.
This connectivity aid assumes that all products being connected are Sony. If any of the products
that you are using are not Sony, then please refer to your user manuals for additional information.
Before starting your connectivity project, please check that you have all the relevant cables.
These can be purchased from your local Sony Centre, or from an alternative Sony retailer. For
more information, please contact your local Sony Customer Information Centre.

Where a set top box is featured, it can be substituted with a Freeview box, or a similar unit.
However, the connections may vary. In this event, please refer to the manufacturers instruction
manual for further assistance.
Features such as Smartlink are not available on all televisions or video recorders. Please refer to
your supplied instruction manual for confirmation on whether your product offers this feature.
If your connectivity enquiry includes a Sony Integrated Digital TV (IDTV), refer to your IDTV
instruction manual for details relating to the RF (aerial) connections and relevant Smartlink
connections.

Owing to the complexity of connectivity enquiries, it is possible that your

query may not be resolved by the use of this booklet. In this event,
please contact your local Customer Information Centre where a Customer
Information Agent will be pleased to assist you.
If your query is complex, they will be pleased to locate a Sony Authorised
Service Centre who will be happy to arrange a service call to assist you.

20 HELP. I’VE FOLLOWED YOUR DIAGRAMS AND IT IS STILL NOT WORKING.

WHAT DO I DO NEXT?

3
Version 2

Common connection cables

Scart cable
When you look down the end of a Scart cable, you will see up to 20 pins – see diagram above.
This is the most commonly used connection between televisions, DVD and VCR units. They
are usually able to carry a signal both ways. However, one-way Scart cables are also
available. If you are using a one-way Scart, please check that you have connected it to enable
the signal to be carried in the required direction.

Male – Female connection Female – Female connection

RF aerial cable
When you look down an RF cable, you will see a center pin that will either be hollow (female)
or solid (male). This cable is used to allow your television, VCR and DVDR to receive a
signal from your outside aerial. In addition to a Scart connection, any product that requires a
broadcast signal should be connected to either another product that has a link to an aerial, or
in the case of a TV, directly to the aerial. You will need to ensure that you have the correct
type (ie male – female/female to female) depending on the products that you are connecting.

S-video cable
When you look down an s-video cable, you will see 4 pins (see above diagram). This cable
carries a higher quality signal than a composite cable. However, in order to use this type of
cable, both connecting products require a dedicated s-video input/output. In some cases,
the s-video signal is carried via the Scart connection, in this instance, the cable will consist of
a connector as above on one end and a Scart on the other.

4
Version 2

3 phono – 3 phono
When you look down a phono cable you will see a single pin. Although this diagram shows
red, white and yellow, it is possible that you will have different colours. This is fine,
providing you ensure that you use the same colour connection in each connecting product.
Theses cables can be used in conjunction with a Scart adaptor (pictured below) to convert
a phono connection to a Scart connection, or more commonly they are used to connect
camcorders to TV front input, or TVs to hi-fis.

Scart adaptor
On one side of the adaptor you will find 3 phono inputs and one s-video input (see previous
diagrams). On the other side of the adaptor you will find a Scart input (see Scart
explanation). This adaptor is used when you are connecting a product that has phono
connections only into a Scart connection on an alternative product. An example of this
would be connecting a camcorder to a Scart input.

Component cable
Hi quality cables are recommended for a component signal. However, three phono cables
can be used. Component signal is a high quality signal mainly found on Plasma and hi-
end DVD machines. In order to connect via component you must use three separate
cables to carry 3 different colour signals; red, blue and green.

HELP
I’VE FOLLOWED YOUR
DIAGRAMS AND IT IS STILL NOT
WORKING. WHAT DO I DO
NEXT?

1) Check that your Scart cables are properly inserted. If necessary, take them out and re-seat
them.
2) Check that the cables in the sending product are in the out socket and are connected to the in
socket of the receiving product.
3) Have you selected the correct input select? See individual diagrams for further assistance on
this.
4) Ensure that your cables are not faulty. You can do this by swapping the cables around. If you
discover a faulty cable, return it to the supplying retailer.
5) If all else fails, contact the retailer who supplied you with the products or your local Sony
Customer Information Centre
