Render therefore to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s 

Matt 22: 15 – 22 

1. The people tested Jesus saying: “Tell us if it is lawful to pay taxes”. 
a. There were many different theories and believes among the Pharisees, Herodians and the Sadducees. 
But one thing in common among them is that they all had plotted ways to trap Christ Jesus. 
i. The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the Lord 
and against His anointed <Psalms 2: 2> = they had all persecuted Christ Jesus it is because all of 
their lives, thoughts and spirits were not with Christ Jesus (God). 
b. They thought if they were to question Christ, Christ will not be able to answer. Even if Christ had given 
them an answer, they will try to find fault in Him; meaning, they were not clear at all regarding the 
promises of God and their believes. They have no answers to matters of faith. 
i. They had plotted to lure Christ into saying: “pay no taxes to Rome”, so that this could cause 
Christ to be against the law of Rome, and could submit Christ to the Roman government for 
judgment <Luke 20: 20>; but if Christ said: “pay taxes”, it will aggravate the people of Israel.  
ii. But Christ Jesus had answered them in such a wise manner: “render therefore to Caesar the 
things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s”. This had made them speechless. 
c. Many people thought that faith in Christ and practicality contradicts each other and that the faith in 
Christ could not provide many practical answers to the common problems which were faced. 
i. For the non‐believers, they were stubborn and they criticized. As for the believers, many times 
they live to compromise the world and they were weak. All these originate from the 
misunderstanding in Christ Jesus. 
ii. In the Gospel of Christ, there are clear answers to all things. The confusing and ironical events 
of believers originated from their incomplete understanding to the Gospel. Therefore, when we 
are confused, we should learn more about the wisdom and answer which lies in the Gospel. 
iii. Therefore, the degree of the sanctification of a saint lies in the degree of the understanding in 
the perfect will of God in everything and everyday he/she lives. 
 
2. Jesus said: “Render therefore to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are 
God’s” 
a. While living on earth, there are 2 types of people, 2 worlds (the spiritual realm and the material realm) 
and there are 2 laws as well. It is not that the 2 worlds should be against each other, and they should 
not separate from each other. Of course, there are relationships between them. It is just that the 
matters in the smaller world (the material realm) could not comprehend the bigger world (the spiritual 
realm), the limited could not contain the infinite, the temporary could not comprehend the eternal and 
those which belongs to the world (material realm) could understand those that are of spiritual. 
i. There are people who belong to God and people who are worldly / matters belonging to the 
spirit and matters belonging to the flesh / laws of the spiritual realm and laws of the world. 
ii. He who is spiritual judges all things, yet he himself is rightly judged by no one <1 Cor 2: 15>. 
iii. Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, nor have entered into the heart of man, the things which God 
has prepared for those who love Him <1 Cor 2: 9> 
b. Only a true spiritual person could see that all things, all matters and all the people in the entire 
universe existed because of God and it is all being governed by God 
i. The objective of God on earth is to glorify His son Christ Jesus, gather the eternal citizens of the 
Kingdom of Heaven and to establish an eternal Kingdom. Because of this, God also temporarily 
allowed Satan to be the contender of God, the principalities of power in the air, making people 
fall and also the governor of the world = God hardened the heart of the Pharaoh, allow him to 
 go against God and persecuted the Israelites, all is to accomplish God’s perfect will <Romans 9: 
17>. 
ii. Through this setup of spiritual surrounding, only then God could train His holy citizens in order 
to obtain “born again”, sanctification and the crown of glory. These are the holy and glorious 
works of God. 
iii. In this temporary world which we live in, all matters go according to God’s perfect timing and 
schedule until the numbers of people whom will be saved are fulfilled. 
iv. When the history of the world comes to an end, Satan and his followers will be put to eternal 
judgment; Christ and His people will rule the eternal Kingdom together. 
c. We have to understand that God’s beautiful perfect will is not for us to deny the world, nor to 
compromise with the world, but we should triumph over the world and influence the world = as the 
Lord said: “Render therefore to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are 
God’s”. 
i. “To God the things that are God’s”: The heaven, the earth and all the things existed because of 
God and for God; therefore, all the saints should offer their lives, time and strength to God to 
glorify God, be a blessing for the people and for the establishment of the Kingdom of Heaven. 
“To Caesar the things that are Caesar’s”: The saints should understand and succumb to 
authorities, because all authorities came from God and was appointed by God. Therefore, those 
whom oppose authorities are opposing God’s ordinance and these people are looking for self 
judgment. For rulers is not a terror to good works, but to evil <Romans 13: 1‐7>; Servants, be 
submissive to your masters with all fear, not only to the good and gentle, but also to the harsh 
<1 Peter 2: 18>; Therefore I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and 
giving of thanks be made for all men, for kings and all who are in authority, that we may lead a 
quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and reverence. <1 Tim 2: 1‐7> 
1. The saints should obey the laws and legalities of the world (the 5 duties): The law, taxes, 
national defense, education and occupation; Christ Jesus paid the taxes and He glorified 
God <Matt 17: 24‐27>. The laws of the world existed for the peace of the majority of the 
citizens whom are kind and gentle, and it is all from God’s perfect will. When the saints 
obey the law and the authorities, they are obeying God’s perfect will and it is all to 
glorify God, be a blessing for the people and for the establishment of the Kingdom of 
Heaven. 
2. In all philosophies of governing (communism, capitalism, despotism, dictatorship, 
democracy, socialism) and in all environments (common, poverty and richness, prison, 
collection post and the palace) a saint can always present God’s righteousness and 
God’s gentleness. 
3. But as a saint, we mustn’t obey to the sins of the governors of the world, worship the 
idols and anything which go against God; saints must not deny the world, but must not 
mingle with the sins of the world. Saints must leverage on the strength from God to be 
“the light and the salt” of the world. 
** A few things which we should think deeply about this: What if a saint engages battle 
for the country’s sake? Engages in political revolution? The revival of all citizens to be 
disciples of Christ? Making mass prayer in the public? 
 
 
3. They marveled at His answer and kept silent <Luke 20: 26> 
a. Lord Jesus Christ had triumph over the world. He has given the most complete answer and wisdom to 
His disciples. 
i. Christ Jesus has the perfect wisdom / the perfect accomplishment / the absolute victory in 
eternal. 
ii. Christ Jesus did not deny the world, but He had used His way of living in the world as an 
example to His disciples (how to obey God in everything we do). 
iii. Christ Jesus did not deny the realities of the world, but He has used his life (daily, in every 
matter and practicality) to display how the Kingdom of Heaven has descended. 
iv. Christ Jesus did not deny science, reasons and the laws of nature. But most of the time, He run 
His life according to His “science, reasons and the laws of nature”. But at times, He has to 
display certain miracles to testify the mysteries that for Him and those who are with Him could 
even triumph over science, reasons and the laws of nature. 
v. Christ Jesus has displayed an infinite love to us and He has given us examples of forgiveness, 
compassion, love, blessing, hope and how to wait. 
vi. He has lived as a poor, lowly and a harsh life to call others to have richness, honorable status 
and peace. 
b. The qualifications of a saint will surpass the qualification of the people around the world. 
i. Identity, belongings, authority, strength, inheritance, eye sight, wisdom and time. 
# The saints in the history did not deny the world, but they did not compromise with the world. 
They all had lived and triumph over the world and influence the world. 
(Noah, Abraham, Moses, Joseph, Denial, David, Solomon, Paul) 
# Among the saints of this era, we have always heard and witness about great testimonies of 
great lives. 
c. In the life of a saint, a saint should treat everything as an education material, and obtain what Paul has 
obtained: “For the mysteries which I have learned and depending on the strength given to me by God, I 
could do everything” <Philippians 4: 11‐13>, “the things which happened to me have actually turned 
out for the furtherance of the gospel” <Philippians 1: 12> 
i. Understand the mysteries in our common environment – know our own prospects, inheritance 
and how great our strengths <Eph 1: 15‐23> and in our own conditions, discover how great and 
deep the love of Christ <Eph 3: 15‐21>. We have to become a person with wisdom, a person 
who treasures time and discover the perfect will of God in all things <Eph 5: 15‐21>. 
ii. As time goes by, we’ll definitely obtain the perfect answer and wisdom, we’ll know how to save 
others, heal others and bless others.
