CREATIVE VIETNAM DIGITAL MAGAZINE ARTICLE

An online creative magazine is planning an edition of feature articles on contemporary artists and designers in
Vietnam. As part of the featured article, the magazine would like to publish a list of some of the key contemporary
examples of art and design. To support editorial staff to generate this list, you have been asked to research a
contemporary artist or designer who you feel should appear on this list and pitch them to the editor.

Your research file should include a critical analysis of their art and design work, highlighting the context in which
the work is produced and how the content is communicated to the viewer. Your team of 3 is tasked with art
directing an informative article (write, caption, illustrate and/or photograph and design) with accompanying
editorial cover concept (landing page) and 3 Social Media teasers with reference to the following:
 Critical analysis of their art and design work, highlighting context and content communicated
 Their career successes and challenges
 Their advice for students and young professionals pursuing a creative industry career in Vietnam
 Who or what inspires their creative work and what goals they have for the future.

Instructions and guidance to candidates

You are tasked with creating 4 styled feature images and 5-8 supporting images for your feature article. Develop a
concept that is appropriate to the magazine brand and target audience (the consumer and the magazine reader).
Consider how you will create a narrative through images that will attract your target audience and maintain the
artist/designer as the focus of the images.

In creating the images you should consider the following:

 the magazine brand aesthetic: the key messages of the brand
 the magazine aesthetic and agenda; you must create images that are relevant to both the magazine and
the artist/designer
 the target audience, which consumer group are they part of, what are they likely to be interested in and
attracted to?
 production values: lighting, image composition, retouching and captioning (shotlist and storyboards)
 styling: attention to detail is vital, ensure clothes, makeup and location/s suit the article focus, adjust
location and use props if needed.

You will be required to submit an evaluation of the final images. You should critically analyse your own work and
honestly appraise it. Consider:
 are the images appropriate to the magazine brand you have produced them for?
 explain how you have art directed images that are appropriate for the magazine you intended them for
 what strategy have you used to make the article appealing to your audience?
 discuss the technical aspects of your images, how did you make decisions based on lighting, composition
and the final selection of images for the portfolio?
 discuss and analyse your approach to the art direction. Was it based on a narrative, a particular design
style or concept?
What ideas and feelings do you think the images embody? Have you used any cultural or historic reference
points?
Explain what these are and how you have referred to them in the art direction.
