The round was created by Dr. Mary Cohen and the Oakdale Community Choir which is a prison choir based in
Iowa, US. Every week, c.45 inmates (the Inside Singers) and c.45 outside volunteers (the Outside Singers)
compose original songs, share written reflections, and perform together at the Oakdale Prison, for incarcerated
audiences and outside guests.

Mary says, “the goals of the Oakdale Community Choir are to provide choral singing experiences for men of
Oakdale Prison who are not restricted to their units, and for women and men in the community who have an
interest in learning more about issues in the prison system locally and across the state and nation. The choir
seeks to cultivate caring within ourselves and to build communities of caring inside Oakdale Prison and beyond
its walls. We hope to deepen awareness of U.S. prison systems to inspire actions, healing, and positive changes
to issues related to justice and society.”

At the Community Music Activity Commission conference of the International Society for Music Education in
Edinburgh in 2016, it was transformed into a mash-up with a popular television theme tune.

Mary brought the mash-up back to the Oakdale Prison where Maria Ortega Kummer added a spoken word rap
to finish off the piece. Their recording is on the Oakdale Choir website: http://oakdalechoir.lib.uiowa.edu
