 Students have learnt about number lines

Represent and solve simple addition and subtraction problems
using a range of strategies including counting on, partitioning and
rearranging parts (ACMNA015)

 Use counting on to add one digit numbers
 Write an addition sentence of the problem being demonstrated

Teacher’s Prior Preparation/Organization: Provision for students at educational risk:
 Pop sticks  Students that are at educational risk will be in a separate
 Cup class
 Origio book  However, students that are struggling with the concept
 Interactive whiteboard will be assisted throughout the lesson
 Mini whiteboards/ whiteboard markers for students

Time Motivation and Introduction:
Align these with the

8min  Place 5 pop sticks flat next to the cup, explain to students that these pop sticks are Mini whiteboards/
in the cup, but for now we are keeping them outside so that we are able to whiteboard markers for
complete this activity students
 Then place 2 pop sticks in your hand, ask students how many pop sticks would I
have in the cup if I added these pop sticks in my hand? How do you know?
 Repeat this 4 times and each time ensure that the number of pop sticks in the cup
and the amount in your hand is different
 Each time ask students how many pop sticks would you have if this amount was
added to the cup?
 While completing the activity get students to write on their whiteboards each
addition sentence
 Then place 7 pop sticks next to the cup, ask students how much of the addition
sentence can we write?
 Then write on the board 7 + _ = _
 Then place 2 pop sticks in your hand
10min  Ask students to write the addition sentence on their whiteboards
 Repeat this activity to show 6 +3, 5+1, 7+1, 9+3 and 8+2
 Once finished ask students to put back their whiteboards, get their origio books
and go back to their desk
14min  When students are back at their desk, go through the step in together as a class
 Then read the instructions for the step up and step ahead and get students to
complete it independently Origio book
 Walk around and assist students were necessary Interactive whiteboard
 Hand out worksheet from twinkle for students that finish early 17 twinkle worksheets
 Ensure that students work is getting marked while walking around and assisting
them
Lesson Closure:(Review lesson objectives with students)
 When students are finished the activity in their origio books
7min  Get students to sit on the mat and go through some more equations with the pop
sticks Whiteboard
 Ask students to write up the addition sentence on the whiteboard for each of the Whiteboard marker
problems being demonstrated

 Students need to pack everything away and have everything cleared off their desks

 Lesson objective one, two and three were met by students participating in the class
discussion and by completing the worksheet and activity in their origio books.
