A Special Christmas Present

David wants to buy a Christmas present for a very special person, his mother. David's
father gives him $5.00 a week pocket money and David puts $2.00 a week into his bank account.
After three months David takes $20.00 out of his bank account and goes to the shopping mall.
He looks and looks for a perfect gift.

Suddenly he sees a beautiful brooch in the shape of his favorite pet. He says to himself,
"My mother loves jewelry, and the brooch costs only $17.00." He buys the brooch and takes it
home. He wraps the present in Christmas paper and places it under the tree. He is very excited
and he is looking forward to Christmas morning to see the joy on his mother's face.

But when his mother opens the present she screams with fright because she sees a spider.

TEXT II

Pussy, My sweet cat

I have a cat. Her name is Pussy. She is my beautiful gray Persian cat. She has a small
body. She also has two ears. It has smooth fur. She has four legs. She walks with pride and grace,
performing a dance of disdain as he slowly lifts and lowers each paw with the delicacy of a ballet
dancer. Her pride, however, does not extend to her appearance, for she spends most of his time
indoors watching television and growing fat.

Pussy is as finicky about visitors as she is about what she eats, befriending some and
repelling others. Pussy does not do this to establish his territory, as many cat experts think, but to
humiliate me because she is jealous of my friends. After my guests have fled, I look at the old

fleabag snoozing and smiling to her in front of the television set, and I have to forgive her for her
obnoxious, but endearing, habits.

TEXT III

DELLA’S DAILY LIFE

Della usually gets up at five in the morning. After taking shower, she takes praying.
Della always helps his mother every morning. Her mother prepares breakfast for the family.
Della makes her bed, and she wakes her brother up. She cleans the house and her brother feeds
the chicken and then he takes a bath. At 6.15 they have breakfast, and at 6.30 Della goes to
school with her mom by motorcycle. Her brother goes to school by bicycle. Her father goes to
the office by car.

TEXT IV

BIRDS

Birds are interesting flying animals. They are vertebrates and warm blooded animals.
They belong to aves class and they can be found all over the world.

Birds breathe with their air pocket. Beside as respiration organ, air pocket also can
enlarge or reduce their weight when flying or swimming.

There are many kinds of birds. Earth bird has special characteristic. They have different
morphology according to their food and their habitat. Some of them eat seeds, pollen, fish

 or meat. There are some species that live in land and the others live in water. Land birds
live on their nest.

Female birds have specific tasks. They lay eggs and feed their baby, beside that they look
for foods for their baby.

Is Smoking Good for Us?

Before we are going to smoke, it is better to look at the fact. About 50 thousands people die
every year in Britain as direct result of smoking. This is seven times as many as die in road
accidents. Nearly a quarter of smokers die because of diseases caused by smoking.

Ninety percent of lung cancers are caused by smoking. If we smoke five cigarettes a day, we are
six times more likely to die of lung cancer than a non smoker. If we smoke twenty cigarettes a
day, the risk is nineteen greater. Ninety five percent of people who suffer of bronchitis are people
who are smoking. Smokers are two and half times more likely to die of heart disease than non
smokers.

Additionally, children of smoker are more likely to develop bronchitis and pneumonia. In one
hour in smoky room, non smoker breathes as much as substance causing cancer as if he had
smoked fifteen cigarettes.

Smoking is really good for tobacco companies because they do make much money from smoking
habit. Smoking however is not good for every body else.
