Reflection
(Minimum of 3-4 sentences per question)
1. Briefly describe the field experience. What did you learn about technology coaching and technology leadership from completing this field
experience?

I was very fortunate to participate in a wide range of learning experiences while I worked with a student with spinal
bifida. I was able to use a variety of high and low-tech resources. High tech tools included the iPad, Merge Virtual
Reality Cube, SMART board, specialized software, and switches. Low tech tools included specialized utensils,
chairs, and everyday items such as a blender and Perfection board game. I learned that facilitating technology often
includes using many forms of resources.

2. How did this learning relate to the knowledge (what must you know), skills (what must you be able to do) and dispositions (attitudes, beliefs,
enthusiasm) required of a technology facilitator or technology leader? (Refer to the standards you selected above. Use the language of the PSC
standards in your answer and reflect on all 3—knowledge, skills, and dispositions.)

As a technology coach, I believe this field experience reinforced the fact that I will need to be aware of
digital tools and resources that engage students in authentic experiences. This includes adaptive and assistive
technologies that support individual student learning needs. Not only will I need to stay abreast of the latest
advancements in assistive technology tools, but I must also recognize the importance of low tech tools that are
readily available as well. By engaging in this field experience, I learned that thinking outside of the box will be an
important skill to refine. Believing that all students, even those with disabilities, can learn is an essential core belief.

3. Describe how this field experience impacted school improvement, faculty development or student learning at your school. How can the impact be
assessed?
Although the student I worked with was severely limited in his physical abilities, the use of the switch and touch
screen/Augmented Reality technologies helped increase his amount of interactivity. For example, he was able to use
the switch hardware that was attached to a blender to create a smoothie which we drank. Without that technology,
he would not have been able to complete that activity. He could also use the touch screen on the iPad to
communicate his feelings, needs, preference, etc. I believe the impact of using assistive technology to help this
student can be assessed by observing his interactions and recording them on his EIP.
