Sports and sportsmenship

Sports make our body strong and active. Some of the games improve upon the intellect and the sense of morality in the
participants. Sports provide necessary exercises to the body and develop a sense of discipline in the character of the
players. There are two types of games: indoor and outdoor. Indoor games are carom, judo, cards, table tennis, billiard, chess, etc.
and outdoor games are badminton, basketball, lawn tennis, baseball, volleyball, hockey, football, cricket, etc.Matches and
tournaments are held to put to test the skill, stamina and hardship of the participants. Medals, shields and cups are awarded to
the players for achieving excellence in their performance. This creates a competitive attitude among the players, and also a spirit
of sportsmanship of fair play, equal respect and appreciation of better players. Discipline learned during sports helps in the
player's future life.Broader competition can be seen in international matches and fixtures, as in the case of Olympic Games.
Sports take a very important place in today's world.Sportsmanship means behavior thats fair, honest, and polite in a game or
sports competition. Sportsman is a person who can take a loss or defeat withoutcomplaint, or victory without gloating, and who
treats his opponents with fairness, generosity, and courtesy. This is a quality which we need at the time when we are both
winning or losingthe game. Its a display of mutual respect for opponents and officials. It creates the kind of positive atmosphere
that will make it possible for every participant to feel proud of their own efforts andresults(no matter what thescoreboardshows)
and acknowledge the efforts of their teammates, opponents, and referees. And this is what we all need in every walk of life.

Sports and Sportsmanship

Who is there who may not have heard the sayings ‘A healthy mind lives in a healthy body’, and ‘All study and no play

makes Jack a dull boy’. Sports and games are undoubtedly the building blocks of the health and character of children. Their
importance in the over-all and holistic development of children cannot be denied. Games instill in students many valuesand
virtues. The first is a sense of discipline. All games are time bound activities. They start at fixed time, continue for a specified
amount of time and then there is always ending time. The player has to do his best within the given time to win game. This time-
limit makes him aware of the value of time.He prepares himself keeping the time in mind. Secondly, games teach us focus and
concentration. The player focuses on strategies to win a game. For example inorder to score the target in a cricket match, he
keeps the target in mind and plays accordingly. This enhances his focus.Thirdly, games teach us teamwork, camaraderie, and
cooperation. A player has to play in coordination with other team members. He learns how to adjust and adapt in relation with
others. This ability to work in a group and team is very essential in the current times.Later on I life one has to work always in a
team, at work, research projects,or any type of work, it is all team work. So team work one learns the best at play
ground.Fourthly, games teach us sportsmanship. We learn good etiquette and polite behavior with our opponents. Games also
teach us how to accept defeat and further self-improvement. So games are essential in building a strong character. We must
encourage young children to play at least one game regularly.

Values and ethics

Values and ethics are of high importance in determining the nature of a society or a culture. Values and ethics are used as
complimentary terms but they mean different in literal sense. Value define personal character and refer to the beliefs that a
person practices when he interacts in personal and social relationships. The conduct exhibited by the person in personal-social
behaviors gives a correct evaluation of his morals. Values identify the way a person lives. Ethics are the codes or standards of
conduct expected by the group to which the individual belongs. In other words, ethics are the set of principals or the theory that
decide a person’s values.Ethics are the actions of a person in conscious and represent his free form of being not by seeing how
they are performed, but seeking a judgment on whether the act is ethically right or wrong. Ethics and values are conceptually
different but lead to the same outcome of determining the social system and intend to promise a life of excellence for present
and future generations. A person with good values is involved in good deeds and always knows it inside. A person doing bad
deeds at the same time may always consider it right in adaptation to the society he lives but is actually having bad values. If the
ethical and moral values of a person have declined, he will never feel any shame of fear in performing a wrong deed or even a
heinous crime as it is something appropriate by his values and ethics. Most of the times, it is experiences and the way a person is
brought up that decide his actions and hence his morality and ethics.Social ethics and values have been deteriorating over time.
As a result, the numbers of crimes like murders, thefts, kidnaps, molestation, incidents of snatch and run and illegal practices like
terrorism, hoarding, drug abuse etc. have seen multifold increase in just few years. If we want to see a society that has a very low
crime rate and where all humans can live safe, we have to look into the morals and the ethics that our sculptures and religious
masters preach. We have to take the responsibility of making our society and in turn our earth a beautiful place where all humans
can live a life of respect and dignity with no fears in their mind.

2. Ethics and values are very personal. One has to be totally convinced about their beliefs, so if it were me, this is
what I would say.If I say I am honest, most would say, why - it holds no value in today's day and age? If I say
that I believe in the truth, I would be told that real truth does not exist, it's just my understanding of it. I also say
that for me, right and wrong exist and I would be told - it's all perception. What I consider wrong, may not be
even be a blip for someone else.So what values do I stand for? I still stand for what I think is true, honest and
right. I value honesty, because I have to face myself. I believe in integrity - because it's too easy to pretend and
be otherwise. Life is more fun if there is challenge and adventure. There is a right and a wrong, but we find ways
to justify (perception), because it's too difficult to go with what's right. But this is what I believe. Each person
finds their own values and principles - but the challenge is to stick to them. It doesn't mean inflexibility, but
conviction. So, if you are to give a speech, on values & ethics, I hope you are convinced enough to talk about
them, live by them and standby them.

The Elderly

The elderly people are our roots that support us at the base underground; though they are hidden underground,
our existence without them is impossible. As there can be no present without the past, similarly, the young
cannot have their being without the elderly. We forget to comprehend the power of the old that is keeping the
world stable. Our very life will come to a standstill without the elderly. 'Old is gold' aptly describes the
importance of old people in our life. Have you ever been hurt? Have you ever undergone the agonizing pains of
heartbreak? Have you ever fallen ill? Have you ever felt any dilemma in your life? Have you ever felt lonely and
forlorn? If yes, you must be remembering vividly who stands by you through the vicissitudes of dark and hard
time! Of course, the so-called old people in the form of our parents, grandparents! Our parents and
grandparents shine in our dark world like rays of light. Great authors, leaders, scientists, doctors, etc often do
breakthrough in their respective fields in their old age usually, which is no less than a light shining in the dark.
If living more number of years is old age, then the sun, the stars, the rivers, the oceans, the mountains must be
termed old also. If they are old, who is making our world go? The truth is old people are the most indispensable
part of our life. They are the light of this otherwise dark world. We must respect them and love them for their
invaluable light of love and wisdom in our life! It is very unfortunate that in some families, the elderly are not
given due respect and treated badly. They are discarded by their own children for petty things in life. Such
lonely elderly people have to take shelter in old age homes. We must not forget that homes cease to be sweet
homes without the elderly. The elderly people have all the valuable experience and wisdom with them. We must
use it to make our life better. Besides, the kind of unconditional love we get from them, no other person or being
can give us that type of love. We must hold on to the elderly people in our families and stay in the light of their
love and wisdom. We need the elderly and the elderly need us!
