This paper is structured as follows. In Section II, the effec-


tiveness of reactive voltage control in three-phase four-wire
unbalanced radial distribution networks is studied. In Section III,
the convex optimization problem that results in the tuning of
the local control parameters is presented. The test system is
described in Section IV. Finally, Section V discusses the obtained
results and compares them with different local control methods.

II. EFFECTIVENESS OF REACTIVE POWER IN THREE-PHASE

VI. FURTHER RESEARCH


In this paper, local control parameters are tuned repeatedly to
control reactive power and the curtailed active power in unbal-
anced distribution grids. It can be investigated how often the
local control parameters have to be adapted. That is, local control
parameters can be tuned for a whole week to avoid overvoltage.
The amount of communication is decreased, at the expense of
reduced performance.
In this paper, the local controllers react to changes of the
produced PV power. Another interesting extension would be to
make the local controller react to local voltage measurements as
well. The optimization of the control parameters then becomes a
non-convex problem, requiring global optimization methods or
algorithms that can generate acceptable solutions in a limited
computation time.

VII. CONCLUSION
This papers describes a combination of a central and local
control method for voltage control by PV inverters in unbalanced
distribution grids. It was shown that in unbalanced three-phase
four-wire grids the neutral-point shifting effect requires special
care for active and reactive power control. The reactive and
curtailed active power controlled by the PV inverters are a
function of the produced PV power and are defined by a first-
order spline. The parameters of all the splines are regularly
retuned by a central convex optimization program, i.e., every
15 min. This way, the local controllers can respond quickly to
changing weather conditions, while a central optimization of the
local parameters guarantees a near-optimal use of the reactive
power and a minimum amount of curtailed active power.
Simulations show that the proposed control ensures that the
voltage complies with the limits, while it results in fewer losses
