Importance of Learning Psychology for Humans

INTRODUCTION

“Try not to become a man of success but rather try to become a man of value” as
quoted by a famous and well known scientist Albert Einstein, makes us wonder, what
makes humans derive assumptions and conclusions about the world we live in? What
makes us different from animals and why do we behave the way we do? To understand
this, we need to dig deeper into our mental and psychological sphere, how we analyze
and perceive things with each of us having a unique and individual understanding about
our world. Differences among humans creates individuality but also a common goal; to
succeed, persevere and satisfy ourselves.

The aim of our assignment is to highlight the importance of the study of psychology for
humans as it entitles us to recognize the importance part of our mental well-being and
how it can be controlled and managed to further our ambitions and thus even change
society.

With each generation having a different idea and interpretation about our world,
studying psychology full-fills our goal of interception the human brain and seeking our
both our emotional and cognitive responses.

As the years pass by, we evolve and incorporate different ethics and systems to
establish a better society and therefore psychology becomes a key and ever-
progressive field of study.

The Importance of Learning Psychology as a Human

BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF A PERSON’S ACTIONS AND

BEHAVIOUR

Humans are very complex beings. Each and every one differs in action and possess
unique behaviors. Understanding these qualities in depth requires a deep knowledge of
psychology. With the power of psychology, one can begin to understand the various
actions that we as human beings tend to do.

Human behavior includes the things they do, ponder, feel and act out. These elements
can be further understood with the comprehension of psychology as we get to learn the
general characteristics and the differences. We get to know what motivates a certain
person to behave in a certain manner at a certain time and also how external influences
force them to react to a certain stress, relationship and lifestyle.

DEEPER UNDERSTANDING OF TYPES OF MENTAL DISORDERS AND

NECESSARY TREATMENTS

The human brain is a complex computer that runs many processes through the entirety
of its existence. Psychologically, when the brain reaches its plateau or is disturbed by
external sources, it tends to malfunction. Those
malfunctions lead to all possible mental disorders
which have classified by professional psychologists.
Mental disorders have dire consequences on a
human’s life. By learning psychology one can
understand these disorders better and can actually

tackle it by themselves if faced.

Luckily, psychologists are always researching and coming up with new treatments for
the types of mental disorders that have a damaging effect on our sanity. By mastering
the knowledge of psychology one has the ability to put a stop to those disorders with the

proper practice and guidance prescribed by the psychologists. For instance, students
nowadays easily succumb to anxiety and low self-esteem. With the knowledge acquired
by learning psychology, they can actually control and negate the effect of these
disorders and get back to their normal selves.

GREATER UNDERSTANDING AND SELF DEVELOPMENT

Psychology has the ability to make us aware of what we are and what our capabilities
are. It can help us understand our emotions and inner self better. Responses towards
various emotions and pain alleviation can be learned in detail through psychological
principles.

On the other hand, psychology enhances a person’s ability in various aspects across all
boards. It can upgrade a person’s
communication skills by comprehending
another person’s behavior and actions in
detail, and responding back to them in an
effective manner. They can also avoid
possible pitfalls that can lead to
communication breakdown through a clear
understanding of human psychology. A
depth understanding in psychology triggers our brain to think
critically in any situation. Student nowadays require this critical thinking skill to be well
rounded in today’s working world. By learning and taking up psychology courses, the
business, law and other professionals will obtain thinking skills which can be applied in
problem solving situations.

A bright career prospect also awaits when one masters the basic understanding of
psychology. According to the Anglia Ruskin University in the U.K., those who prepare
themselves for more than one jobs, both in mental health and in educational industries
are the ones who understand what psychology is all about.

WISE UNDERSTANDING OF RELATIONSHIPS

Learning psychology also helps us in understanding and maintaining a healthy and

close relationship with our family and friends. Through this we can easily learn on how
to blossom a relationship and also ways to get it back on track when things are not
going so well. Many might argue that our happiness in life doesn't depend entirely on
having a close relationship, but it is definitely enhanced by having bonds that are both
healthy and close. If it seems as though yours aren't working as well as you'd like them
to, it's possible that with some minor adjustments you can get things back on track with
the help of some psychology tricks.
Although studying psychology doesn’t necessarily
make you psychologically healthier (any more than
studying medicine makes you physically healthy),
Psych majors do have this knowledge at their
fingertips and are more aware of the fact that good
interpersonal and family relationships require
attention and work. Psych majors should, at least,
know where to go when they need counseling
or psychotherapy. Overall learning psychology does give you an upper hand when it
comes to relationships in our life, thus making our life a happier and more enjoyable
one.

HELPS IN UNDERSTANDING CRIMINALS AND THE POTENTIAL

DANGER THEY POSE TO HUMANITY

This aspect of the point can be defined simply as “criminal

psychology”. It can be defined as a science, which helps
investigative institutions in fulfilling their mission more
effectively by applying a psychological knowledge to it.
5

You may ask how exactly does it help in understand criminals and if it can really help in
preventing crimes let alone solving them. A major part of criminal psychology is the
studying of why people commit offences, what their motives are, and what made them
do what they did. It helps to read the thoughts, intentions, and reactions of criminals.

Psychology also plays a huge part in criminal profiling, also known as offender profiling.
It is the process of linking an offender's actions at the crime scene to their most likely
characteristics to help police investigators narrow down and prioritize a pool of most
likely suspects. This also plays a huge part for us to identify future offenders and
criminals with the already existing criminal profiles. However, profiling is still a relatively
new area of forensic psychology that during the past 20 years has developed from what
used to be described as an art to a rigorous science.

Nowadays, as society throughout the world is much more developed than about a
century ago, everyone agrees that fighting crime gets more and more sensitive and it is
not simply “catch and imprison” work anymore. Psychology truly gives a big lending
hand towards this cause. We will not only be able to recognize potential criminals and
their potential dangers, but helps in identifying them in the future thus making our
society a safer place to live in.

PSYCHOLOGY, ABOVE ALL HELPS US MAKE SENSE OF THE

WORLD AND THE PEOPLE THAT WE SHARE IT WITH.

In the ever increasing pace of the modern world, we often tend to become so
ensconced in our own world that we often forget that we share the world with seven
billion other people. In doing so, we are committing a great disservice to the nature of
humanity. The fact remains, as long as we have been alive, we are no longer closer to
understanding the exact intricacies of the human condition, and this is what psychology
aims to do. The beauty of psychology lies in the fact that it is not a specialized subject. It
is true that there are some who are significantly better at it than most but it much rather
serves as a tool. A tool by which, after having obtained a sufficient knowledge of it or
6

just naturally piecing together what is observed, helps us understand the people that we
interact with.

The world is an unbelievably complicated place, but tools such as this arm us with the
ability to cut through the smog and see things for the way they are. It helps us frame the
situation in such a way that it enables us to distil down most of the obfuscation into
something that is more manageable, making the world a little bit easier to digest.

Understanding and learning psychology brings the great benefit of cultivating practical
wisdom. Practical wisdom is the
fruit of the labor. Not only does it
allow you to be able to perceive
others but it also serves as a
means to perceive one’s self. In
doing so, it also imparts a degree of
self-reflection and self-awareness
and in the wilderness of the
concrete jungle, sometimes these
are skills that could give you the upper hand.

These skills will help you get that next promotion because you were able to adapt to the
circumstances that lead to your boss looking at you favorably, or allowing you to form
an intricate network of contacts that you can call upon to aid you because you were
successful in reading them in such a way that made you charming to them. When you
understand psychology, you understand people, and when you understand people you
begin to understand the world and in most cases, isn’t that what we really want?

CONCLUSION

In conclusion learning psychology is important because it helps in personal

development, it will help you to understand the possible motives of other people and to
understand your own motives better which will result in more personal growth and
development and also to navigate your relationships more effectively in your business,
with family, partners and friends.

You’ll learn to better understand the flaws in your own thinking such as those that come
from cognitive biases and you’ll learn to better help yourself overcome various forms of
anxiety disorder or bad habits etc. Another highly useful and related skill that you can
gain from learning psychology is critical thinking which involves looking at the different
theories and studies that have been carried out in different areas of a subject and then
trying to discern which of those provide useful and accurate information.

By looking at potential flaws in those arguments you will then be better positioned to
engage in debates and to make judgments. This can be useful in many areas of life,
from helping you to discern between helpful and unhelpful information, to aiding in
arguments in your professional and personal life.
