Enhancing the Memorization Skills of Senior High

The problem and its background

Introduction

Modernization is an era where in newest technology, newest inventions, newest

lifestyle, newest method and newest information are used by most of the people. And

technology becomes one of the fundamental things for us to live at ease in our daily

living. (Caones et al. 2016)

Technology is the use of science in industry to invent useful things (Merriam-

Webster). Technology refers to methods, systems, and device which are the result of the

scientific knowledge being used for practical purposes (Collins English dictionary). One

of the user of modern technology are the students. They used technologies not only for

school matter but also for their daily living and entertainment. One of the newest

inventions is enhancing the memorization skills in using computer aided instruction.

Memorization skills are basically the ability to memorize in a span of time. Learning does

not guarantee you have the ability to learn. (MistyRR1,.) The enhancement of

memorization skills using computer aided instruction is a website that will practice and

improve the skills in memorizing of the senior high school students. It allows them to

practice it not only in their free time but in a school setting as well.

This study aims to measure the improvements of the memorization skills of the

senior high school students at Our Lady of Fatima University, lagro campus in the idea of

creating a memorization skill enhancing website through the use of computer aided

instruction.
Background of the study

Memorization creates long-term memories that are particularly devoid of context,

associations, and meaning (Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine,

2016). Memorizing and learning establish a good connection. In fact, students who

equate learning with memorizing achieve understanding of what is being taught, (Sachs

& Chang, 2003).

In the goal of achieving the enhancement of learning capabilities of the senior

high school students from Our Lady of Fatima University, the researchers are making a

drill and practice application through the use of CAI. The researchers will stuff the said

application with practices of different subjects in different fields. According to the poll,

three-fourths of Filipino adults (76 percent) say they understand spoken English; 75

percent say they read English; three out of five (61 percent) say they're comfortable

writing in English; close to half (46 percent) say they speak English; about two-fifths (38

percent) say they think in English; while 8 percent say they are not competent in any way

when it comes to the English language. (Pinaroc, J. D. and Calimag, M. G. 2008.) Then

the researchers implemented a field from the English language where in students can

practice their proper grammar. Also, the researchers themselves as senior high school

students, find the table of elements hard to memorize so they come up with idea of

putting this field as another practice in the application that they are making. The

researchers will also put a practice of math equations suitable for senior high school

students. It is because Filipino students are still weak in math and science, according to

results of the Third International Mathematics and Science Study-Repeat (Philstar news.

2000).
Objectives of the study

General Objective

To create a website that can be used by students to enhance their memorization

skills with the use of CAI.

Specific Objective

 To create a responsive website with proper information, tips and tricks that will

improve the memorization skills.

 To create games that generate numbers, letters or words at the start and per level of

the game with a given time limitation.

 To identify the demographic profile of the student respondents.

 To identify how it affects the memorization skills of the SHS student respondents

 To distinguish how the CAI with drill and practice helps in improving the

memorization skills of the SHS respondents.

Theoretical Framework

Skilled memory theory

According to Chase and Ericsson, Skilled memory theory describes how subjects

can acquire exceptional memory skills and thereby develop long-term memory with

performance characteristics comparable to those of short-term memory. They

investigated the detailed mechanisms of exceptional digit span and had explored the

generalization of skilled memory theory.


The proponents used the skilled memory theory of Chase and Ericsson in

extending the knowledge of exceptional memory performance and in particular explore

the general information of this theory. Chase and Ericsson built an experiment to give

extensive practice on the digit-span task to monitor the processes of any improvements in

memory skills during the trials.

Skilled memory theory is acknowledgeable to the students that experiencing

unattended memory skills as if they engage in any activities this theory can help them to

analyze and also to expertise them as a students. This theory is validated in memory skill

and exceptional memory performance of the students to help them in their studies and to

see brighter improvements of memory skills performance.

Aside from that, there is a new two studies tested three principles of skilled

memory in the domain of exceptional digit span. One study says it is enables more

reliably the digits to retrieve only the first two digits of the number, and the other study

showed in addition to encoded other patterns and relations between digits to recognize

them easily. This study monitors in detail emergence of a retrieval structure as a function

of practice.

Statements of the Problem


The problem provides the context for the research study and typically generates
questions which the research hopes to answer. The purpose of this study is to enhance the
memorization skills of the Senior High School student respondents in Our Lady of
Fatima University through the use of CAI (Computer-Aided Instruction).

Specifically, the problem is an important one by answering questions such as these:


1. What is the demographic profile of the respondents?

1.4 Strand and section
2. What is the level of acceptance of the respondents on the benefits of Enhancing
Memorization Skills application in education sector for senior high school
students?
3. What is the level of agreement of the respondents on the web-application affects
the memorization skills of the SHS student respondents?
4. What is the level of agreement of the respondents about the CAI with drill and
practice helps in improving the memorization skills of the SHS respondents?

Scope and limitation

This study will be focusing on the grade 11 and grade 12 senior high school

students in learning capability rate with regards of them using computer aided instruction

to enhance their memorization skills and to improve their awareness in new technologies.

It will be conducted in Our Lady of Fatima University, lagro campus. It is located at #1

Esperanza St., Hilltop mansion height, Lagro, Quezon City.

The website that the researchers are making is aimed at students who wants to

enhance their memorization skills in a fun way. The website contains tips and tricks to

improve memorization skill and games such as numbers test, letters test and words test.

It will be conducted in the 2nd semester of school year 2017-2018. The researchers

will be selecting 100 grade 11 and grade 12 students randomly. This study will focus on

subjects such as Mathematics, English and Science.

Significance of the study

This study aims to identify how it will benefit the following:

Students. This study will benefit them truthfully for it can improve one’s learning

capability using of computer aided instruction.


Teacher. It can serve as a reference to be able to cope up with the student’s knowledge

regarding in technologies. And the students will be active on their classroom because in

learning capability using computer aided instruction it will have information or learning

that can also be use in a game.

School. It will encourage to develop a new website for the improvement of the school.

Community. The results of this study will benefit the people for introducing a new way

for enhancing a skill of an individual.

Future researcher. The findings of this study could serve as their reference in their

research and it will lead them to more deep studies in developing a new website.
