TYPES OF CLAIMS

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
At the end of the lesson, students are
expected to:
∎differentiate the different types of claim;
∎ classify statement according to its type;and
∎ formulate a statement for each type of claim.
Claim is the writer’s point
or position regarding the
chosen topic.
Claim is the central
argument or the thesis
statement of the text.
A claim is a sentence that
summarizes the most
important thing that the writer
wants to say as a result of
his/her thinking, reading or
writing.
What are the
different types of
claim?
CLAIM OF FACT
states a quantifiable assertion or a
measurable topic
not necessarily a fact
asserts a stand regarding a debatable
topic
uses sufficient, accurate, and recent
evidence
EXAMPLES
• All men are created equal.
• Cancer is not contagious.
• The earth is warming rapidly.
• The atmosphere has too much
carbon dioxide.
