What is 3D City
Model?

• The 3D City Model is a digital representation and

visualization of the urbanized areas including the
terrain surface, buildings, infrastructure, city
landscape, vegetation, water body, city furniture,
and all related physical city elements.

Why 3D City Model ? Since the real world is in 3D,
then the corresponding virtual
3D city models support the
representation, exploration,
In particular, 3D city models
allow "for visually integrating

planning and running.

• The 3D City model is one of the initial tools to implement the

concept of the smart city and the base map of the spatial data and
geographic information system is the basic layer of smart cities.

• Georeferenced elements - Spatial data.
• Geometry.
• Layers and attributes-based model.

What are the • Multi-Scale and Different Level of Details.

• Semantic.
Characteristics • Dynamic and interactive.

of 3D City • Editable.
• File-based and Database are supported.
Models? • Extension Domain Application.
• Geo-BIM-CIM based for Smart City Mapping.
• Collaborative and web-based.

4
• Despite there are many different techniques and
methods to create a 3D City Model, still a complex issue,
resources, time and money consuming.

What is the • The main problem or challenge is to provide a unique 3D

City Model that contains all the characteristics.
Problem ? • Also, the interoperability issues could be an obstacle
because of many different file extension and formatting
with different sources of data, applications and software

Some solutions

Collaborative Design Activity

There are many software and applications extracting features and objects by
using the OpenStreetMap as a base map for spatial data
and geographic information systems
6
Autodesk one the leaders of
CAD applications and software,
using the OpenStreetMap as a
base map to generate 3D City
Model, Prepared by Autodesk
InfraWorks 360

Conclusion

• The accurate Contribution to Data entry on

OpenStreetMap means so much more than
participating to land cartography, since we can provide
digital representation of our real world to allow
virtualisation of our cities and georeferencing every
single element in 3 D City Models, so we can say that
we are in the heart of the processes of digital
transformation , where it’s the keyword for the
connected objects and the internet of things and
preparing the ground for Smart cities.
