Hindustan Times

This newspaper was started in 1924. The founder was Sunder Singh Lyllapuri. He was also the founder
of the Akali movement in Punjab and the political party namely Shriomani Akali Dal (SAD). Later Madan
Mohan Malviya along with Lala Lajpat Rai, G D Birla & M R Jayakar raised a fund of Rs. 50000 to acquire
the Hindustan Times. Birla took the control of the paper in 1933. It was Ghanshaymdas Birla, who took
the control of the paper, it was later transferred to his son Krishna Kumar Birla. K K Birla had three
daughters namely Shobhana Bharatiya, Nandini Nopany and Jyoti Poddar. Presently, Shobhana
Bharatiya, the Rajya Sabha MP (Congress) is the sole owner of the newspaper. The present Editor-in-
chief is Sukumar Ranganathan. Shobhana joined the Hindustan Times in 1986. The HT Media Limited
is a subsidiary of HT Ltd, which is also a subsidiary of Earthstone Holding (Two) Ltd. Famous journalists
like K M Panikkar, C F Andrews and Devdas Gandhi used to write in the Hindustan Times. In 2004, HT
started its youth edition namely HT Next, a daily. The Mint is known to be the business daily of this
group. Nandan is the monthly magazine for the children published by the group. The name of the hindi
daily is Hindustan, Kadambani is the monthly literary magazine. Fever (104.0) is the renowned FM
channel by this group. The supplements of this newspaper are HT Education, HT Estates, Shine Jobs,
HT Live Bhopal, B’rishu etc. Famous columnists associated with this newspaper are Barkha Dutt, Karan
Thapar (Sunday Sentiments), Manas Chakroborty (Loose Canon), etc. Sonal Kalra is the Editor of the
HT City. She also writes a column namely ‘A Calmer You’. Brunch is the Sunday magazine
supplementary of the HT. Poonam Saxena is the editor of Brunch. She writes in the column ‘Small
Screen’.

Sangbad Pratidin

A bengali daily published from Kolkata. It was started in August 9, 1992 by Swapan Sadhan Basu aias
Tutu Bose. Presently the Editor in chief is Srinjoy Bose. It has a famous cartoon strip namely Amal Aloy,
drawn by Amal Chakroborty. It is a broadsheet.

Bartaman

This is the second widely circulated Bengali daily in West Bengal. It is published from Kolkata, Siliguri,
Burdwan and Midnapore. It was started in December 7, 1984 by Barun Sengupta, a noted journalist
of that period. In April 2002, the online version of this newspaper was also started. The present Editor
in Chief is Subha Dutta. It is a broadsheet.

E-Bela

This is a tabloid publication and also a daily in Bengali language. It is published fro Howrah and Kolkata
and generally has 32 pages. The Editor is Anirban Chattopadhyayay and Editor in Chief is Arup Sarkar.
It has three major parts – E Bela, O Bela and Robibela.

Aajkal

It is a Bengali daily and broadsheet. First started in 1981, this newspaper is still published from Kolkata,
Siliguri and Tripura. It was started by Abhik Kumar Ghosh. The first editor was Gour Kishore Ghosh and
the present editor is Ashok Dasgupta, a renowned sports journalist.

Ananda Bazar Patrika

First published in 1922 as a 4 page eveninger. Later it became a broadsheet and a daily too. Now it is
published from Kolkata, Burdwan, Borojora, Siliguri in West Bengal, Silchar is Assam, Mumbai and New
Delhi also. The internet edition was started in 2001.
Jugantar Patrika

A famous Bengali newspaper and a adaily which was started in 1906 by Barindra Kumar Ghosh,
Abinash Bhattacharya and Bupendranath Dutta. It was a broadsheet and was highly critical of the
activities of the Indian National Congress. The paper derived its name from the novel namely Jugantar
authored by Shivnath Shastri. It was forced to shut down in 1908.

Ganashakti

A political mouth piece of Communist Party of India (Marxist) and also a broadsheet and a daily in
Bengali. It was first published in 1967 as a fotrtnightly and at that time it was published in evening.
The publisher and editor is Narayan Dutta.

Ei Samay

The owner is Sahu Jain Co. and the editor is Suman Chattopadhayay. It was started on October 15,
2012 and it is a publication from the Bennett, Coleman and Co. Ltd. It is a broadsheet and a daily too.
It is believed to be a fierce competitor of Ananda Bazar Patrika and Bartaman nowadays. It is published
from Kolkata and New Delhi.
