MERCER COUNTY COMMUNITY COLLEGE

Mathematics for the Liberal Arts – MAT 120 – 300

Course Syllabus – Summer U 2019
Instructor: Alison Becker-Moses: Email: beckera@mccc.edu (best source of contact):
Office Hours: By appointment only, can be online or in person

Required Materials:

Text/Software: MyMathLab is the required software for this course. The supporting text is
Survey of Mathematics by Angel, Abbott, Runde – 10th edition. The e-text is included with My
Math Lab access. You MUST register and access the materials though the Blackboard link.

Course Components:

Online MyMathLab Work: During each week, you will read the chapters from the e-book
where concepts corresponding to the homework assignments are illustrated. These lessons are for
you to learn the material. The corresponding homework is for you to practice to prepare for your
discussions and tests. You may work ahead within the software, but you must not fall behind the
deadlines given below. Materials for the second half of the course will not be posted until near the
test 1 deadline, so you do not get too far ahead of the class. These are all found in the
MyMathLab software.

Discussions: You must stay on schedule with the class for theses forums! There is NO point
in posting to a forum after the due dates. That would miss the point of “discussing” with
others. Discussions are a required component of the course and will be posted in Blackboard.
Your initial posting must be completed by 11:59pm on Fridays and your follow up postings must
be completed by 11:59pm on Tuesdays during the week they are posted. You will receive a grade
based on 100 points each week: 70 points – having an original response, with thought provoking
explanations; 30 points – responding thoughtfully and thoroughly to other student’s posts. LATE
POSTS are not accepted and given a grade of 0.

Attendance: Attendance each week is mandatory. You should make a point to login at least
three times per week in order to keep up with the activities of the course. If you do not login to
the course for 2 weeks, it will result in your being withdrawn from the course.

Tests: There will be two tests, each given in the testing center at the West Windsor campus.
Tests MUST be competed no later than the deadlines indicated below. No books, notes or
formulas may be used with the tests. Cheating will result in a 0 for the test and/or an F in the
course. Each test can be taken only once and there are NO retests or make-ups. Missed tests
get a score of 0.

Grading Distribution: The grades will be assigned as follows:

MyMathLab 30% A: 93 – 100% A-: 90 – 92.9%

Discussions 20% B+: 87 – 89.9% B: 83 – 86.9% B-: 80 – 82.9%
Tests 50% C+: 77 – 79.9% C: 70 – 76.9%
D: 60 – 69.9% F: Below 60%
Extra Help: If you are having difficulties and need additional help beyond the classroom, do not
wait - you will only fall behind and this is to be avoided as much as possible. You may seek
assistance from any or all of the following sources. Note that there are no additional charges for
any of these.

 Your solutions manual

 Your instructor during office hours or by e-mail
 Tutors in the Learning Center on both campuses (LB214 – second floor library – behind
the bookstore, in West Windsor)

The last day to withdraw from summer U session courses is July 5, 2019. This is the only
possible way to get a grade of W or WI for the course. After this date, any student who
does not complete the course will receive an F!

Statement of Appropriate Classroom Conduct

Mercer County Community College welcomes all students into a learning

environment that creates a sense of acceptance, pride and respect. With that as our goal,
students need to be aware of their responsibilities and follow common rules of courtesy
during all class sessions. Behaviors that disrupt or distract from the learning process are
unacceptable. As learners in an adult institution, it is your responsibility to act as such.
 Be respectful of other students at all times.
 Differing viewpoints, strengths, and learning styles among fellow classmates
should be acknowledged, respected and appreciated. All students should be
made to feel comfortable in expressing opinions and in asking questions.
 Students should never:
o Knowingly represent the work of others as their own
o Use or obtain unauthorized assistance in the execution of any academic
work
o Give fraudulent assistance to other students

Violators of the above actions will be penalized and may be

removed from the class for the benefit of other students.

Any student in this class who has special needs because of a disability is entitled to
receive accommodations. Eligible students at Mercer County Community College
are assured services under the Americans with Disabilities Act and Section 504 of
the Rehabilitation Act of 1973.

If you believe you are eligible for services, please contact Arlene Stinson, the
