90 Minute Lesson Plan

This lesson plan assignment is shaping me for my future as an educator. By completing

this assignment, I will also be continuously up to date on the standard requirements of being a

teacher.

InTASC Standards:

“Standard #9: Professional Learning and Ethical Practice The teacher engages in ongoing

professional learning and uses evidence to continually evaluate his/her practice, particularly the

effects of his/her choices and actions on others (learners, families, other professionals, and the

community), and adapts practice to meet the needs of each learner.” (ccsso.org) With this

standard I will always be updating my education to be able to teach the future generations with

more ease. I must continuously improve myself, while educating my students.

“Standard #7: Planning for Instruction The teacher plans instruction that supports every student

in meeting rigorous learning goals by drawing upon knowledge of content areas, curriculum,

cross-disciplinary skills, and pedagogy, as well as knowledge of learners and the community

context.” (ccsso.org) This standard helps me to become more prepared with the duties of

teaching. Lesson planning will be a factor of my everyday life as an educator. Collaboration with

colleagues for lesson content and projects is, most likely, the most helpful tool teachers have;

each other. Once student relationships are built, it is necessary to incorporate long-term and

short-term, individual and group, goals into lesson planning. We must also be sure to include

culture diversity and prepare for disciplinary issues throughout the lesson.

Nevada Common Core Standards:

• Writing Standard for Literacy in History/Social Studies, Science, and Technical Subjects for

Grades 6-8: Text Types and Purpose

Write an informative/explanatory texts, including the narration of historical events, specific

procedures/experiments, or technical process.

Observable Objective:

The students will be writing an informative essay about a famous scientist of their own choosing.

The essay will contain the life and death of the scientist as well as their greatest achievements

and personal life.

Students will be able to summarize the scientists life for comprehension and research skill

improvement.

• Reading Standard for Literacy in Science and technical Subjects for Grades 6-8: Key Ideas

and Details

Following precisely a multistep procedure when carrying out experiments, taking measurements,

or performing technical tasks.

Observable Objective:

The students will be creating an originally designed epitaph for their famous scientist. The

multistep procedure is to make sure all the information is included on the epitaph as well as

decorated accordingly.

Students will be able to create and design an epitaph as well as a “farewell slogan” on the

epitaph.

Learning Styles:

For this lesson, it will included audio, visual, and kinesthetic learning styles. We start

with the audio style first, by showing a little internet clip of the different sources the students can

use for their research. (study.com) The visual aspect will be a finished product sitting either up

front, or on the board as a guide to what I am expecting to be turned in at the end of the class.

The element of kinesthetic comes into play with the students creating their scientist’s epitaph.

Multicultural Goal:

The students will understand how scientists from different cultures and backgrounds

shaped the scientific community.

Materials Needed:

Students will need a computer with internet access (iPad, or laptop) for research as well as a

partner or group. They will be handed out a blank epitaph handout sheet and will be required to

use their own paper and writing materials. Students will also be given crayons, colored pencils,

and markers for decoration.

The Life Of A Scientist

Grade Level – 6-8

Introduction or Hook:

The students will be given out all the materials needed and then I will explain the Project. Once I

reveal that the Scientist option is student’s choice they will be motivated to get started.

Mini-Lesson:

The students will be shown a small clip about what sources to use as cites for their research.

They will be informed that the main goal is to find a scientist, research when and where they

were born and died, as well as one or two essential achievements, and what branch of science

they were involved in. The students may feel free to add any personal life details if they choose. I

will show them what I expect the essay and epitaph to look like, as well as pair them off into

groups of two or three.

Guided Practice:

After learning what is required the students will be free to grab anything they need as well as a

laptop or iPad for their group. The students will begin their research as I walk around the room to

answer questions or guide students in the right direction if I see they are slipping. Continuously, I

will warn students about their time frame and how long they have left to complete their research.

Independent Practice:

Once the students have all their information, as well as their questions answered, they will show

me the progress so far before continuing onto creating their scientist’s epitaph. This is the chance

for the students to be creative and think deeper. The requirements for the epitaph will be the

scientists name, branch of science, greatest achievement, birth and death dates, and finally a
!5

“goodbye quote”. The epitaph may also have original artwork. I am still available to answer

questions while the students apply almost all strategies and learning styles.

Exit Slip:

The epitaph and essay will be turned in for grading. The assessment for this is to make sure the

students followed all directions for this multistep project. If the students have a quote, two dates,

a name, and an achievement on the epitaph, they completed the lesson.

Reflection:

The students will achieve raising their skills in areas of research, essay writing,

comprehension, understanding, and creativity of making an epitaph of their own within this

lesson. The students will also be given the chance to show off their skills of independent work

and decision making skills. Their option to choose their own scientist creates a self-starter

motivation for the project.

Students should be fully engaged the whole lesson. They should be able to conduct

enough research to meet criteria within the first forty to sixty minutes of the lesson. Students will

them be able to complete the second half of creating an epitaph for the remaining time. The

active learning is working together in groups or pairs. They are also working on improving

collaboration and social skills with this lesson. For the students who choose not to engage it will

be reflective on their grade, and if they misbehave severely a call home, or trip to the dean is

necessary.

The weaknesses for this lesson plan are student engagement and enthusiasm. Students

have to want to do their own research. For completing their research in a timely manner they can
!7

be rewarded with candy or stickers. The strengths within this lesson plan are my ability to

delegate the timeline and the student’s responsibility to turn in the project on time. This project

will be worth a significant amount of points for their grade. It will also be a project that is

displayed within the school and for parents.

Incorporating the InTASC standards for this lesson was easy. I am already taking classes

to progress my person education, and plan to for the rest of my life. The other standard was

collaboration with other educators. I had the marvelous opportunity to work closely with two

different education workers. The first peer to help me was an elementary school teacher. She

helped me to format my lesson plan to the best of her ability, and helped come up with the

creative aspect. My second peer comes from the administration world of education. She works

for the district to help improve literacy skills in all schools. The help received from these woman

were unimaginable and helped me think in ways I never dreamed possible.
