Praxis Core Exam Analysis

Exam Requirements

Becoming a teacher is a rigorous journey of higher education, and in depth assessment of

skills. The first step, as a student finishes their associates degree, is to pass a Praxis Core exam. It

is considered a basic skill exam designed to determine whether a candidate meets the minimum

competency to enter the field of teaching. In most cases, a teaching license is directly linked to

the Praxis exams. This exam also is required before a student can be admitted into the school of

their choice, and start working on their Bachelor’s of Education degree. The passing score for the

mathematics section of the Praxis Core exam is 150, the passing score for the reading section is

156, and the passing score for the writing section is 162.

Exam Preparation

When I learned about the Praxis exam, I was terrified. The only test I have ever taken that

is similar, is the G.E.D exam. I immediately put pressure on myself to do well on the Praxis Core

exam. Close to the end of my associates degree, I knew I would have to start the studying

process for the Praxis Core exam. I bought myself a Praxis Core exam preparation book and be-

gun reading the material, and took one practice test since the start of the summer semester.

Exam Results

The Writing section of the exam I received a 58%. This result shows me that I still need

to improve my skills in text types, purposes, and production.

The Reading section of the exam I received a 39%. This result was a bit surprising for

me, and I realize I have a lot to study before taking the full Praxis Core exam. I have to work

harder on identifying key ideas, and integration of knowledge. As well as, taking my time to not

rush reading the material.

The Mathematics section of the exam I received a 58%. This means that I need to im-

prove my overall score. Math has never been my strong suit. Reviewing the breakdown of which

math sections I had the most trouble with I am determined to conquer geometry, and statistics

and probability.

Future Exam Preparation

To prepare better for the actual Praxis Core exam, I have a lot of options to choose from.

I will definitely be continuing on the self guided Praxis Core exam preparation book. I can also

continue taking the practice tests, and the review information on teacherstestprep.com. As an-

other option, I can also enroll in a couple of preparation classes, either online or through CSN.

After expending those options, I could look for a private tutor, or take the C-BEST test as a re-

placement. Taking the C-BEST is not ideal but, could take some of the pressure off of myself.

The worst case scenario is, I don’t end up passing the Praxis Core exam, or the C-BEST, and I

can take three more CSN courses as equivalency. I need to take my time to read every word, and

not let the pressure take over the material, I know, I understand.
