WABCO
Pores and Blowholes on Sealing Surfaces JED
588
Prev. Edition Abbreviated Title
Pores&blowholes; seal.surf. 852 005 880 4

1 Scope
The specification refers to the size and distribution of pores and blowholes on sealing and
bearing surfaces which in exceptional cases may be allowed after WABCO approval. It refers
to all types of components and manufacturing methods.
This specification shall be applied if the suitability of components ready for installation is verified
by 100% visual inspection. It is not suited for the assessment of casting quality in the foundry
effected by sampling inspection (before or after machining), because it describes the limit case,
not the desired condition.

2 General
Pores and blowholes on sealing surfaces cause leakages and increased wear, thus reducing the
component’s strength. Therefore, in order to obtain optimal castings which are free from pores and
blowholes, the supplier and the WABCO Product Development Team shall effect an intensive
interchange of know-how at an early stage of development prior to making new tools, models or
moulds. Together with the manufacturing range, the clamping points and lay-on points and details of
machining shall be defined, because tools might influence cut pores and blowholes.
The specification gives rough guidelines and permits only an approximate assessment on the basis of
experience; in case of doubt the decision on the use of the component shall be based on a functional
test.

3 Assessment
The assessment of permissible pores and blowholes has to be made without optical enlarging means
such as magnifying glasses, microscopes etc in direct comparison with the table of figures. In this, the
largest pore or the largest blowhole is decisive.
On the same casting, the areas for assessment shall be classified according to the different
requirements.

4 Application
4.1 Application of the table of drawings – determination of nonconformity code/s
The permissible nonconformity code for the application intended can be taken from the table of
drawings represented on page 4. The magnified CAD model of sealing element and pore might also be
helpful.
4.2 Application of the table of figures
The permissible distribution and the sizes of pores and blowholes represented in the table of figures on
page 5 shall be compared with the area to be assessed of the casting.
In this
(a) the actual pore/blowhole diameter has to be smaller than or equal to the permissible pore/blowhole
diameter
(b) the minimum distance (amin. ) between pore/blowhole edges has to be greater than or equal to the
permissible distance between pores/blowholes.

5 Indication on drawings
If individual functional surfaces have to meet specific requirements, the Product Development Team
has to enter the indications relating to max. permissible pores and/or blowholes directly in the pertaining
document.
The symbol to be used is a horizontal diamond. In case of several functional surfaces having to meet
different requirements, a counting number shall be added in the field. The permissible nonconformity
codes shall be added next to the diamond symbol.
If the supplier and WABCO find out in talks that determinations are missing, the requirements shall be
defined in accordance with the present specification and added to the WABCO documents.

6 Translation of the terms

Since the tables of drawings and figures have been used since 1987, the German representation has
been added to this JED without change, and the translation of the terms applied in the tables is given
here.
