Psalm 121:2 “My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and
earth.” This verse from the book of Psalm reminds me that no one gets where they
are on their own. The journey to PhD was my hardest undertaking and at times I
did not know if I would finish, but I am happy to say WE DID IT! This celebration
goes far beyond me because without the love and support of ALL of you this
you during this gargantuan endeavor, I am deeply appreciative and blessed. Some
prayer and/or sent many encouraging texts, or Facebook post and Messenger
chats. There are a lot of people whom I am indebted to and to whom I have to
in different ways all these years, either on the professional or on the personal front.

teaching. Without him, I will not be directed with my dissertation. Because of him,
I was able to widen my perspectives, and created many great opportunities and

From the first stage of my Doctor of Philosophy in English - Language to the
final stage of writing this dissertation, I owe a lot to the people in University of San
the Graduate School Office, to Dr. Leo H. Aberion, Dr. Jasmin Sumipo, Dr. Janice
Graber, Dr. Milagos Espina, Dr. Jojit Foronda and Dr. Edwin Pilapil, who
continuously created a great environment for me. Although it took a little longer to
finish my degree than they might have imagined, they made my life in USJ - R very

To my sister Zea, her ever constant chums whose times shared with me
during the making of this paper were absolutely priceless, the love, companionship
and help I honestly treasure. I always feel her trust and encouragement.
To my parents, Nanay Naiding and Tatay Jojo thank you for being my place
of refuge and instilling in me from the time I was a little girl the importance of
Master’s degree, and now a Doctorate! Your unconditional love and willingness to
sacrifice for me provided me with the mindset that I can accomplish my heart’s
