ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

Psalm 121:2 “My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and

earth.” This verse from the book of Psalm reminds me that no one gets where they

are on their own. The journey to PhD was my hardest undertaking and at times I

did not know if I would finish, but I am happy to say WE DID IT! This celebration

goes far beyond me because without the love and support of ALL of you this

degree would be unattainable.

As I reflect back on the amazing and overwhelming support I received from

you during this gargantuan endeavor, I am deeply appreciative and blessed. Some

of you were my editors, readers, critics, and cheerleaders. Others lifted me up in

prayer and/or sent many encouraging texts, or Facebook post and Messenger

chats. There are a lot of people whom I am indebted to and to whom I have to

express my gratitude, since they have contributed to this dissertation substantially

in different ways all these years, either on the professional or on the personal front.

I would like to express my sincere gratitude to my brilliant adviser, Dr. Angel

O. Pesirla for the continuous support of my PhD English – Language dissertation.

He is the first linguists I noticed that has been expertly studying about linguistics.

It has always been a privileged to be in his class. From each class I took with him,

I learned very important lessons. I am always impressed by his enthusiasm for

teaching. Without him, I will not be directed with my dissertation. Because of him,

I was able to widen my perspectives, and created many great opportunities and

experience. I thank him for his motivation, enthusiasm, patience, and immense
knowledge while allowing me the room to work in my own way. His guidance

helped me in all the time of research and writing of this dissertation.

Besides my dissertation adviser, I would like to thank the rest of my

dissertation committee especially to Dr. Glenn G. Pajares, the Chairman, for his

expert criticism of the overall makeup of this paper and for his hospitality and

encouragement which I truly cherish. He provided me with direction and technical

support.

To Dr. Milagros C. Espina, member of the panel, for her encouragement,

insightful comments, and questions. I doubt that I will ever be able to convey my

appreciation fully, but I owe her my eternal gratitude.

My in depth gratitude to, Dr. Marietta D. Bongcales for enriching this paper

through sound suggestions and useful insights. I thank her for looking into this

paper leading to the technical improvement and for the patient evaluation of my

written output.

My sincere thanks also goes, Dr. Carmel Vip C. Derasin for her competence

and analytical advises on my study. Her expertise and wit helped in boosting and

encouraging me to finish this paper. I profusely thank her for taking time out from

her busy schedule to serve as my external evaluator.

To my very close friends in work and my classmates in PhD, specially to Dr.

Ana Farah C. Nelmida and Dr. Zarmie Lis Briones, my dissertation buddies, a

million thanks also for the gentle and solicitous prodding that the paper may see

its final form. The laughter shared with them was always a wondrous experience.
From the first stage of my Doctor of Philosophy in English - Language to the

final stage of writing this dissertation, I owe a lot to the people in University of San

Jose - Recoletos, especially Dr. Annie __________, to the student assistants in

the Graduate School Office, to Dr. Leo H. Aberion, Dr. Jasmin Sumipo, Dr. Janice

Graber, Dr. Milagos Espina, Dr. Jojit Foronda and Dr. Edwin Pilapil, who

continuously created a great environment for me. Although it took a little longer to

finish my degree than they might have imagined, they made my life in USJ - R very

special.

To my sister Zea, her ever constant chums whose times shared with me

during the making of this paper were absolutely priceless, the love, companionship

and help I honestly treasure. I always feel her trust and encouragement.

To my parents, Nanay Naiding and Tatay Jojo thank you for being my place

of refuge and instilling in me from the time I was a little girl the importance of

education! Because of you, I have a high school diploma, a Bachelor’s degree,

Master’s degree, and now a Doctorate! Your unconditional love and willingness to

sacrifice for me provided me with the mindset that I can accomplish my heart’s

desire; you are my biggest cheerleaders! Thank you for the concern, support,

untold prayers for this success, for believing in me and for urging me to work harder

to accomplish this requirement, and for providing a home in which to complete my

writing. You have always been counted as a silent part of it all, ever since I started

visualizing the work.

To the person who sacrificed right along with me, Henry II, your patience

and understanding were monumental to my successful completion! You were there

when I am about to give up, you were there to help me remember that everything

will pass. You are a great partner. A god given gift. Without you I would not have

the courage to take on the challenge in finishing this dissertation. From the very

first day I stepped my foot in USJ – R up to the completion of the paper, you never

complained being with me and helping me. Thank you for being the best man. I

have everything when I have you. I am grateful for all of your prayers, love, concern

and support.

To the workers of Cebu Century Hotel, I thank you all for always

accommodating my needs and for being so kind and generous whenever I go to

Cebu for my classes and during my stay as I complete this dissertation. My

heartfelt thanks to Kuya Juso and Kuya Eric for the quick responses on my errands.

I would like also to express my perpetual gratitude to my niece Princess and

his husband Rovel for letting me stay in their apartment when I can’t stay in the

hotel. Thank you for giving me always a comfortable stay in your place.

For the unnamed persons who have lent an ear, a shoulder, an eye, or any

other help to my work and to my life, thank you. You have helped me to explore

more on the road of life. To you and all who read this, thank you so much!

Above all, to Him, our Lord Jesus Christ the greatest mentor, confidant and

ever loving Father for making up things worthwhile and possible and for giving me

a rare opportunity to work and deal with magnanimous people. He is the source of

everything I have.
