Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

I utilized the engagement feature by allowing the groups to pick their own figure to research that maybe
they could relate to the most instead of assigning them one. I also let them choose how they wanted to
research their figure, whichever best suited their learning styles. By doing this, I made my students feel as if
they were a little bit in charge. This gives students motivation to complete a task or assignment. I also utilized
the representation feature by allowing the information that they needed to know be represented in multiple
ways. They could have watched the video, read in a book, listened to a Podcast, or researched the internet.

If the students are English Language Learners, they can gather their information from BrainPop which is
offered in many languages. They could also watch the video as many times as needed. If they needed the
video to be slowed down, they could also have that. If the students enjoy listening to Podcasts, they could use
the iPads and find an appropriate Podcast to gather information from. This is so much more successful for
students instead of giving them a textbook and making that their only source of information. One learning
style does not fit all students.

Beyond-the-Basic Productivity Tools (BBPT)
To introduce the lesson, I am going to show my students a video from BrainPop on Jackie Robinson. Then,
together we will create a Timeline on Jackie Robinson’s life using the video and website resources. Then, I will
explain to the students that they are going to get into a group of 3 or 4 and choose one of the historical
figures from our standard. I will display these on the board, so that they know exactly who they can choose.
The students are going to begin researching their figure after they choose and take notes on their lives and
important events in it.

The students can use BrainPop to research or any resource of their choosing and that best fits their
learning needs. They must label at least 8 important events from their life on their timeline. I also requested
that they include pictures with their timelines. When they complete their timeline, they must share it with the
class.
Reflective Practice:

I set this assignment as a level 4 since I gave my students many options of what they could do in this
assignment. By having my students publish and share their timelines online, I could have moved this
assignment to a level 5. I think that this lesson could have been more of an introductory to our study of the
historical figures. In this assignment, they are really focusing on major events in the historical figures’ life.
Moving forward, I could have them dig deeper into their life and create a PowerPoint presentation on their
figure with images.
