Celgrow soil amendment. Pastures and hay fields are good options.
Mercer Celgar will cover the costs of a qualified professional per-
forming soil sampling, obtaining government authorization and
delivery costs of Celgrow soil amendment based on access with a
large truck/pup combination. Acreage should be able to accom-
modate at least 6 truck/pup loads. The two major components of
Celgrow are individual wood fibres lost from the pulping process
and surplus bacteria from the wastewater biological treatment
facility. Wood fibres enhance soil moisture retention and bacteria
are a good source of soil nutrients. The landowner is responsible
for spreading and incorporating Celgrow into their soil.

Greens to choose candidate
The Green Party of Canada (GPC) Kootenay-Colum-
bia Electoral District Association (EDA) is pleased to
announce that we will be choosing our candidate for the
upcoming federal election on July 14. With the Green
‘wave’ currently sweeping the nation, we have two out-
standing individuals vying for the role. Recent polling
data informs us that Green Party leader Elizabeth May
outranks other federal party leaders in terms of leader-
ship and trustworthiness.

and question the prospective candidates before July 14.
In Nelson on June 25, 7 pm at the Hume Hotel; on July

Wanted: harlequin duck sightings in
Salmo River watershed
If you’re lucky enough to see harlequin ducks in the
Salmo River watershed then wildlife biologist, Marlene
Machmer, wants to hear from you. With funding from
the Fish & Wildlife Compensation Program (FWCP)
and Pandion Ecological Research, the Salmo Watershed
Streamkeepers are doing a harlequin duck pair and brood
inventory from May to July.
A 1996 harlequin duck inventory in the watershed
recorded a significant breeding population of 54 adults,
with 33 males and 21 females. “An FWCP survey in 1999
first documented a decline in adult numbers and then a
resurvey in 2009 confirmed a 22% reduction in the adult
population,” said Marlene. “Habitat degradation and
increased disturbances have likely played a role in the
decline and other impacts – including the March 2019 fuel
spill in the South Salmo River – put additional stress on
this population.”
Sightings are sought from the public to assist in focusing
inventory and stewardship attention on active sites and
in detecting oiled birds. To report sightings of harlequin
ducks in the Salmo River watershed, please contact Mar-
lene at mmachmer@netidea.com or 250-505-9978.
Harlequin ducks are sea ducks that overwinter on the
coast and migrate to the interior to breed. Their ability to
swim in turbulent white water, where they dip and dive
for aquatic insects, is unmatched. For breeding, they select
undisturbed portions of rivers and streams with dense
riparian vegetation. Females return to their natal streams
annually and breed in the same areas, unless the sites
become degraded or disturbed. They’re sensitive indica-
tors of healthy freshwater ecosystems.
The FWCP is a partnership between BC Hydro, the Prov-
ince of BC, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, First Nations
and public stakeholders to conserve and enhance fish and
wildlife in watersheds impacted by BC Hydro dams. The
harlequin duck project is one of 38 projects being funded,

Trail Music in the Park
The Trail & District Arts Council is very excited to bring
you Music In The Park once again this year. With entrance by
donation, it’s the perfect opportunity for you to get outside
and listen to some live music. We are thrilled to be bringing
in artists from jazz, to bluegrass, to funk, to rock and roll –
Music in The Park will surely have something for everybody!

This year’s Music in the Park has something new – Night
Markets on July 18 from 5 to 9 pm and August 8 from 5 to
8:30 pm! The market is hosted by Trail’s Incredible Farmers
Market and will feature an adult only beverage garden! The
first night market on July 18 will feature the Lester McLean
band, who will perform from 7 to 8:30 pm, with opening act
Brad Lee Whiplash & The Werewolves of Thunder starting
at 6:30 pm!
These weekly concerts will be held at Trail’s Gyro Park
every Thursday starting at 7 pm, except on Night Market
dates (Thursday July 18 and August 8) when the event will
run from 5 – 9 pm.
Bring a lawn chair. Admission is by donation, $2 mini-
mum suggested.

July 4: Plan B – Rhythm & Blues
Tuesday, July 9: Fiddle Camp Jam – Instructors from
across Canada make music together.
July 11: Willy Blizzard – Canadiana, folk-roots covers and
originals.
July 18: Lester McLean Band – soul, rhythm & blues with
Tony Ferraro on drums. Opening act Brad Lee Whiplash &
The Werewolves of Thunder– Night Market event from 9 pm
with food trucks, market and beer and wine garden, in asso-
ciation with Trail’s IncrEDIBLE Farmer’s Market.
July 25: Devils You Don’t – jazz, soul, pop, and rhythm &
blues.
