(On May 28, June 11 and June 25, 2019, the Jefferson County Board of Education met in a closed
executive session to conduct preliminary and formative discussions ofthe performance
evaluation ofthe Superintendent, Dr. Marty Pollo. The performance evaluation of the
superintendent is governed by Board Policy 02.14 and utilizes performance indicators for each of
the seven leadership standards,
The following designations were used by the Boat to indicate the superintendent's performance
in the seven leadership standards:
1) Exemplary: Exceeds the standard
2) Accomplished : Meets the standard
3) Developing: Making progress toward meeting the standard
4) Improvement Required: Progress toward meeting the standurd is
unacceptable
STANDARD 1: STRATEGIC LEADERSHIP- The Superintendent leads the development and

‘As aceslt of Dr. Polo's postive energy, enthusiasm and passion, he hasbeen able to begin a
transformational process within the district and throughout the community. Using Vision 2020 as 8
{oundation, this work i guided by the Three Pillars ofthe Backpack of Success Skills, Racial Equity, nd
Culture and Climate. This has resulted ina clear mission and identity for he dist, something that has
been lacking, Dr. Polo's continued emphasis and implementation ofthe Academies of Louisville will
result in our students being beter prepared forthe 21" century workforce, Bold innovations like the
Backpeck are beginning to connect school improvement gosto stdent lamin goals that will hopefully
lead oa future where deeper karing isthe norm within ICPS. Dr. Plli’s ability to articulate, connec,
‘monitor and implement the Siz Essential Systems are additional examples of continuous improvement
strategies toward increasing stidentacievernent. The State ofthe District lancheon and adress is
smother great example of Dr. Folios efforts to engage the community by sharing the mission and vision,
hile st the same time identffing challenges suchas the district's aclty needs. While Dr Plliois
sccomplised inthis are, the 2oard notes that an area for growth is integration and connection of Vision
2020 into the daly work of the dsrct. Immediate action i required to ereate and implementa viable
plan to meet the needs of our students in altemative schools. Early childhood should remain an area of
focus. Additional and continued focus on review of programs is required to ensure maximum
effectiveness fr student leamng. Continued succes inthe area of sirategic leadership will require

STANDARD 2: INSTRUCTIONAL LEADERSHIP. The superintendent supports and builds system
to effectively use district resourees and research-based best practices for curriculum, instruction and
assessment in reducing achievement gaps and continously improving teaching, learning and student
achievement,

Dr. Pollo has demonstrated astrong commitment to creating sy3toms that use daa to monitor and
improve academic performance across the district. Examples include the consistent use of monthly “Vita
Sign” checks with all AIS school principals and school zones, Another novation in the area of using
technology in educational programming is the eration ofan electronic student dashboard that allows
students to have ownership oftheir progress and need for improvement based upon MAP scores and other
indicators. We commend Dr. Pollo leadership in providing teachers with a valuable tool like MAP that
‘enables them to quickly identily and address student academic needs within the sane academic year. We
spplaud Dr. Polo's continues effrs nurturing the Academies of Louisville. Initiatives ike the
Backpack of Soecess Skills have the potential to transform instruction and lead to deeper learning. The
board commends Dr Pollo fr his leadership in succesfully implementing the Backpack at all CPS
Schools within one year, feat that many thought could not happen, While Dr. Pollo is acomplised in
this area, the board notes tht an ara for growth includes more focus aross the district pon secognizing,
reducing and eventual eliminsion ofthe achievement gnps) that exist emong student demographic
soups. Additionally, the board looks forward tothe growth of the Backpack into an integrated system for
the consistent delivery of deeper laring and instruction, including ensuring thatthe Backpack is
responsive to the noods of stucens with diverse learning les.
STANDARD 3: CULTURAL LEADERSHIP. The Superintendent understands the history, tradition
and muliultural differences cf the district. He empowers al stakeholders to help shape district culture
and climate as they support efforts to mmprove teaching and leaming foal

to the board andthe requirement that ll major district initiatives undergo a Racial Equity Analysis
Protocol (REAP), For the seoond year, Dr. Polio has participated with the distits delegation inthe
‘Kentuckian Pride Parade, whch ia significant gesture of acceptance and support fr the district's
LOBTO students tT and alles. ‘The climate inthe community has also been positively affected
trough Dr. Pollio's leadership in increasing communication (Fast Five, Weekly Wrap-Up, Hoard Upeate,
CPS Spoilight, et) and through events such asthe State ofthe District Luncheon, the monthly
‘community “Run with the Superintondnt,”" and the Employee Scholrship Program. The Backpack is
again another example ofa strategy that has the potential to be responsive to the needs of our students
with diverse leering styles, but tht aspect must be ensured a thi ntntive matures. While Dr, Pll
exceeds the standard inthis are, the board cautions thatthe necessary rate of change ad improvement in
the istrict, and Dr, Pollo’ enthusiasm for same, can also lead to fatigue among distit sta, including
