Course Objectives
To provide knowledge on geometric and curve modeling concepts.
To impart knowledge on synthetic curves and curve manipulations.
To describe the mathematical representation of curves.
To explain the mathematical representation of solids.
To familiarize the assembly modeling and data exchange concepts.

UNIT I 10 Hours
INTRODUCTION TO GEOMETRIC AND CURVE MODELING
Introduction to Geometric Modeling - Affine and convex combination, Introduction to Equations - Implicit,
explicit, parametric, wireframe models, wireframe entities, curve representation, Parametric representation
of analytic curves - Lines, Circles, Ellipses, Parabolas, Hyperbolas, conics.

UNIT II 8 Hours
SYNTHETIC CURVES AND CURVE MANIPULATIONS
Parametric representation of Synthetic curves - Hermite cubit splines, Bezier curves, B-spline curves,
Rational curves. Curve manipulations - Displaying, evaluating points on curves, blending, segmentation,
trimming, intersection, transformation.

UNIT III 9 Hours


MATHEMATICAL REPRESENTATION OF SURFACES
Parametric representation of analytic surfaces - Plane surface, ruled surface, surface of revolution,
tabulated cylinder. Parametric representation of Synthetic surfaces -Bezier surface, B-spline surface,
Coons surface. Surface manipulations - Displaying, evaluating points and curves on surfaces,
segmentation, trimming, intersection, projection, transformation.

UNIT IV 9 Hours
MATHEMATICAL REPRESENTATIONS OF SOLIDS
Fundamentals of solid modeling, Half-spaces, Boundary representation, Constructive Solid Geometry
(CSG), Sweep representation, Solid manipulations, Solid modeling based applications.

UNIT V 9 Hours
ASSEMBLY MODELING AND CAD/CAM DATA EXCHANGE
Assembly modeling -top down &bottom up modeling approaches, hierarchical relationships, mating
conditions, interference checking. CAD/CAM data exchange -Introduction, Evolution of data exchange
format, description, data representation of IGES, STEP file formats, data transfer between CAD and CAM.
