( SUB - SOIL INVESTIGATION WORK )
“WOODLAND HOSPITAL”
AT
JOWAI
MEGJHALAYA
-:Prepared by:-
FRONTLINE ENGINEER
M. C. ROAD.
GUWAHATI-3.
2
I NTRODUCTION :
The objective of the Sub-soil investigation work is to determine the physical and engineering
properties of sub-soil horizon underlying the site, for a safe plan and proper design of any Civil
Engineering structure. It is an essential requirement for a Civil Engineer, Architect, Contractors to
have a “Geo-technical Report” for structural safety, Design and Estimation of the proposed
construction.
This report has been prepared pertaining to Design & Construction of the proposed R.C.C
Multistoreyed Building complex to be built for “ Woodland Hospital” at Jowai, Meghalaya.
The above work has been initiated as per request of the Client. The primary
objective of such investigation is to assure the client with sub-soil condition and
precautionary measures to be adopted before initiation of any construction activity.
3
FIELD I N V E S T I G A T I ON :
Field investigation work has been carried out from the 16th to 18th of February
2016,Six (6) numbers of vertical bore holes has been carried out at seven different
locations, which would suppose to cover the approx. area of the proposed construction.
Boring work was done manually by Auger and Shell method up to a depth of
5.00 M from the existing ground surface level. Standard Penetration Resistance test was
conducted in each bore hole at 1.50 M intervals so as to ascertain the relative
potentialities of sub-soil horizons as per recommended procedure in IS: 2131.Record of
N-values appended in Table No.3.
Sub-surface Ground water level was not encountered in BH-1 to 6 upto the depth
of Investigation.
4
Soil samples (both disturbed and undisturbed) collected from the site are analysed in
laboratory as per recommended procedure in Indian Standard code of practice. The test results are
appended in respective tables.
Soil classification was made as per IS: 1498. Grain size analysis was determined from the
particle size distribution curves, which were drawn from sieve and hydrometer test. Findings of test
results, appended in Table No.3 with results of specific gravity test.
Liquid limit test was performed to ascertain plastic behaviors of clayey soil, results given in
Table No.4
Normal moisture content, wet and dry density was determined from undisturbed soil samples,
findings given in Table No.5.
Shear test was performed to ascertain Cohesion(C) and Angle of internal friction (¯), in
Table No.6.
Consolidation test was also carried out to determine co-efficient of compressibility (av) and
compression Index (Cc) shown in Table No.6.
Shear & consolidation parameters are also correlated with empirical chart & graphs adopted
by IS code of practice.
5
From the soil exploration the sub-soil formations as encountered in. B.H.-1 to 10 are hereby
classified as per I.S: 1498.
.
SP/SP-GP : Light brownish/light grayish/light ash/whitish coloured poorly graded medium
to fine grain sand, traces of non-plastic silt, dust-mica, porous layer, inorganic,
mixed with coarse sand, gravels, weathered rock fragments, very dense &
compact cohesionless soil, refusal to penetration to several numbers of bowls by
65 kg drive weight, cohesionless soil with gravels in BH-1,2,3,4,5 & 6 (from
EGL to 5.00M) & in BH-3 (from 3.50M to 5.00M) depth.
SC/SC-GP : Deep brownish/tan coloured sandy clay, poorly graded medium to fine grain sand
mixed with silt, clay binder in traces, fairly saturated, semi-porous layer, non-
plastic soil, inorganic, mixed with gravels, weathered rock fragments, moderate
to dense in compactness, sandy clay formations in BH-3(from EGL to 3.50M)
depth.
From the field & laboratory anal ysis, it has been concluded that, the sub-soil
horizons underl ying the investigated site may be considered suitable for the design
& construction of the proposed R.C.C. Building Complex.
Foundation of the proposed structure may be adopted based on anal ysis &
findings appended in Table No.1, 2 & Bore log profiles.
