Daily Diary entry

Wednesday, 1 May 2019 8:13 AM

29th of April - Monday

Students were not at school and staff was on a PD for the whole day. I took part in a Team Teach program that educates
you about the psychology of behaviour management, biomechanics and safe systems of manual handling. I was given a
course work booklet that outlines the whole program. I was also educated about how to handle students if behaviour
escalates or if students are in a fight how to pull them out. This was all done in a way that would not injure the students
and in a respectful way.

30th of April - Tuesday

First day back for students. Students started out with a maths and English worksheet as a revision tool. A spelling test
followed, this was an assessment tool to test where the students prior knowledge is to then group students based upon
their knowledge. I then took the class to introduce myself which was guided by questions I created. The class then took
part in a get to know you activity that I created.

Getting to
know you
All students took part in a class discussion based upon the questions. Students would then draw a picture about how
they see themselves. This was a very successful lesson as ALL students took part in this discussion where they were able
to have a voice in describing themselves to me. I found this very useful as it was the first step to a successful classroom.
AITSL standard number 1 = Get to know your students. Through-out the day I was keeping an eye on all students and
was available if they needed me to have a one-on-one help.

1st of May - Wednesday A sport excursion was being held today so 7 of our students were out of class so todays
planning was not to do anything new but to focus on revision of previously taught subjects.
The day was started with students doing their beginning worksheet of both maths and English. I sat with a student that
was absent yesterday to help them catch up with their maths and literacy that we did previously, as well as the "get to
know you" worksheet that I created yesterday. Once every student had completed their maths, literacy, multiplication
and handwriting (which I was helping each student work through) we then moved into small groups. I took a group of 4
students (rotation of the class) to do a small game/activity about "homophones". It was a matching game where the
students would find a word, find the homophone word and then match the picture to the word to have the connection
of the spelling and the homophone word. (e.g. ate = I ate an apple. Eight = the number 8.)
Just before the students were let out to Recess a quiz was set to quiz each student on the maths we had done during
this morning. We would go around to each student asking them maths questions and not moving on until they answer
correctly (helping them if need be).
Just after Recess we came back to the teacher starting a topic on measurement. Converting between centimetres and
millimetres. I took 2 students who missed an activity/worksheet out to complete the worksheet and step the students
through the instructions and guide them.
Between Recess and Lunch we created a rotation of the class between working on the iPads (IXL maths app) and maths
games (which I was in charge of). I had students sit with me playing a maths game:
The Halving game:
2 player game
Aim: To be the first player to place three counters, next to each other, in a row, column or diagonal.
Materials required: 36 transparent counters, 18 of one colour and 18 of another colour.
How to play:
1. Players take turns to flick the spinner and place a counter on the board that represents Half of the number shown
on the spinner. For example, if the spinner shows 14, the player would place a counter on 7.
2. Play continues until one player has placed three counters, next to each other, in a row, column or diagonal.
Variation:
○ Allow a 'bump off' rule.
I was on duty for lunch 2 in which I spoke to multiple students and got to know them as well as got to know the school a
bit more.
Students return from lunch to continue the game/iPad activity rotation, the last group sat with me to play the maths
game for a short amount of time and then it was time for sport.
The class has DOT (sport) until the end of day.

2nd of May - Thursday

Plan for today:
- Literacy
I took a group of students to do guided reading where we went around the circle each reading a page and at the
beginning of each page a question was asked based upon the pictures presented. After every page a questions was
asked to review the page. This was very effective with the group reading fluently.
- AUSLAN (Sign language lessons) During this time me and the other Prac students at Lockridge had a meeting with
our prac coordinate Melissa.
- Recess
- Maths
Conversion between centimetres and millimetres. The class watched a video on converting between centimetres
and millimetres. After the video, half the class was with me on the iPads doing IXL (5 different activities) and the
other was doing worksheets about converting between centimetres and millimetres.
- Lunch
- Library
Went over to the library were some students sat with me reading to me. This was only done for 10 minutes for
students to read and then collect a book to take out.
- Continue maths: The group that was doing the worksheets now rotated around to doing IXL activities on the iPads
with me for the rest of the day. I had a group of 10 students in which I rotated between helping them.
- Home
A LOT OF TODAY WAS GROUP WORK ROTATING BETWEEN. Converting between centimetres and millimetres.

3rd of May - Friday

Plan for today:
- Assembly: ANZAC assembly. Students are to respect the ANZAC tradition through a laying of the wreath.
- Literacy: During this time students were doing a weekly maths test and literacy/grammar worksheet. I was asked
to mark the students daily maths worksheets (The worksheets they begin each day with.)
- DRAMA (DOT) Students went to another class to do drama. During this time I finished my marking of the maths
worksheets and stuck the "getting to know you" sheets I created on the window to display it to the rest of the
school and parents.
- Recess
- Maths
- Lunch
- Sport/Clubs: We are given years 5-6 where we are going to split them into 2 groups where 1 group does colouring
and the other does games. This is a way to relax/unravel from the week.

6th of May - Monday

The day began like every other day with the students doing their daily maths (Maths mental) and literacy worksheets
(Reading and spelling). After they had completed that we moved onto marking their Friday's tests they did for both
maths and literacy. We then moved on to doing spelling and writing down their spelling words for the week (depending
on their specific spelling groups. Based on their spelling level.) Each list was said out loud by the class, after each list was
announced we would pause and ask the students if they do not know what any word means (Students would put their
hand up and the teacher would define that word). At the beginning of each list the class would identify the phoneme
that the word is using (e.g. sh, any, ch, sp)
Persuasive writing began to be taught (due to NAPLAN for the year 5s). A NAPLAN persuasive writing example was
shown to the class and went through why it was a high graded mark. 9 different posters were put up on the board about
different techniques used in persuasive writing:
1. Statistics
2. Questions
3. Target audience
4. Rule of three.
5. Opinions "In disguise"
6. Exaggeration
7. Use Persuasive words.
8. Choose better language (good = fantastic)
9. STRONG ARGUMENT

PRAC Page 2
9. STRONG ARGUMENT
As a class we would brainstorm different topics to write about. Once a topic has been chosen the students then moved
onto an activity where they would write a persuasive text about the chosen topic. The worksheet was broken down into
sections ( a. topic, b. why would like that topic, c. argument for that topic, d. reason/evidence to support argument, e.
conclusion.) this would scaffold the persuasive writing for students to understand how to write a persuasive piece.
Some students did not understand how to be persuasive or what arguments to use for their writing so I helped by sitting
with them and having a conversation about their topic.
- If the topic was football I would say "If I said to you I did not like football, what would you say to change my
mind?"
- Students would then give me their point of view which they understood would persuade people into liking their
topic.
Straight after Recess students were at sport so during this time I was finishing up marking some students tests and
worksheets, as well as starting some lesson planning for a health lesson I am teaching on Thursday. There was 30
minutes before lunch just as the students came back from sport so the teacher went over previous work/test that they
had done as a revision tool. After this there was 20 minutes left before lunch so a story was read to the students. As
lunch came around some students who were mucking around during the morning was asked to stay in during lunch to
finish the work they had to get done this morning.

8/05/2019 - Wednesday
I had to send a student to the office and fill out a pink slip (reason why you sent the student to the office) as the
student's behaviour was not acceptable. The student began with not listening to my instructions and then continued to
jump around the class with a bucket on their head throwing a 1metre ruler around, almost hitting other students. At this
point in time during the class, after multiple warnings and options to calm down or further action will be taken, the
students were instructed to do a maths test where this student did not want to do it and did not follow instructions
again so she started destroying objects around her (such as the computer) which was not acceptable and I needed to
take even further action. I instructed the student to go to the office (filling out a pink slip in the process) and the student
started screaming and ran out the back door before anyone could catch this student. She was then located outside the
office later on.

9/05/2019 - Thursday
Half the class was taken into another room with myself and another pre-service teacher to complete an activity and this
is where someone started teasing another student and they got upset and behaviour escalated resulting in someone
getting hurt. This was handled by the teacher as it went to a length that one student needed seeing to (as they got
injured), another student was crying and ran outside of the classroom and the final student was swearing at the teacher
for being accused. At no point could I, as a pre-service teacher, have interjected as it all happened so fast and could not
of been prevented. No de-escalation technique (such as "would you like to have some cool down time outside of the
classroom") in which I have used before could have been used. But after the events had unrolled the students were
taken to the office and came back to the class after lunch with a better behaviour.
I had completed a health lesson in which I created a website for the students to follow, this lesson went well with every
student engaged and understanding the topic. The only downside and problem that I must reflect on was time and
organisation. At first I thought I was on top of everything all students had completed their work effectively and it was all
going well. But then it got into the second activity and I had forgotten to take out the iPads that we were working on and
the activity went longer than expected having minimal time to complete the final task in which we had to skip.

Week 4
21/5/2019
Guided reading lesson. A group of students together read one at a times a chosen guided reading book and discuss the
theme around the book.

22/05/2019
First visit of the supervisor Melissa. The lesson went well, some small improvements of using your "teacher voice" and
putting in techniques to make sure all students are doing what they are supposed to.
A big improvement will be using the WILF and WALT. Learning objectives and standards..

Week 5
27/05/2019 - Monday
Today the start of the week started with students coming in doing their daily maths worksheets. After about 45 minutes
of student doing their routine work they were asked to stop and look to the front as I introduce each students spelling
words. The spelling words are set out into four different groups based upon the student standard and their level. Red
group is a low level base sounds, Yellow group is just above red group with their words, blue group is more advanced
and green group is the most advanced group. I read each word out-loud to the class and then asked if the students know
what each word means. If students do not know what a word means then they ask and I define it for them so they know
what the word they are spelling means.
After the spelling words were filled out in their books, the class was split into year 4 and 5s were I took the year 4s to do
grammar while the year 5s continued with a history project. I worked with the year 4s through their grammar books
doing noun groups (and describing nouns) in which I have created a lesson plan on. I supervised the year 4s guiding
them through their grammar work books and then asked them to either pack their books away or keep them on their
desk to finish later and get ready for recess.
After recess the students went to sport until lunch time, then the school is participating in a cross country activity which
I just have to supervise students.

29/05/2019 - Wednesday
Today we started out as normal doing the literacy and maths daily worksheet then after recess I had a health lesson to
be presented. The health lesson started out a bit all over the place but I soon caught control of the situation and the
classroom ran smoothly with all transitions and work ethic of students. I started the lesson with a brainstorm of students
prior knowledge of water (beach and pool) safety in which I got a variety of knowledge from (which was a good start). I
then transitioned into a worksheet in which I ran the students through using the iPads to scan a QR code to go to the
website that is needed for the worksheets. I outlined a time frame for students to complete the worksheet which it all
ran smoothly with full attention to me and control of the class (by me) when needed. The conclusion of the classroom
went well, I gained the students attention once they finished the worksheet and then went through each question as a
class. The health lesson ran very well and efficiently, with improvements in the areas I lacked previous, using my
"teacher voice" and time management/preparation skills. But to improve for next time I will use the learning objective
standards of WILF and WALT.
30/05/2019 - Thursday
Geography lesson. Presented a geography lesson on CANADA. Went well with every student understanding and
participating in answering the questions. Next time WILF and WALT must be used to have a learning objective for that
lesson.
