ARCHDIOCESE OF LOUISVILLE Pastoral Center, 3940 Poplar Level Road, Louisville, KY 40213-1463 (602) 585-3291 | (502) 585-2466 (Fax) | archbishopaarchiou.org (OFFICE of the ARCHBISHOP June 17, 2019 Dear Parishioners of Saint Francis of Assisi Parish, May God bless you! I am writing to update you on developments related to your pastor. As you are aware, Father Jeff Gatlin stepped away from his role of pastor after several parishioners raised questions about his actions in taking pictures of students during field day. Though Father Jeff did not believe he did anything wrong, he asked to be relieved of his assignment, at least temporarily, so these concerns could be addressed. This action was taken, and Father Joe Graffis assumed the role of temporary administrator. Representatives from Child Protective Services reviewed what occurred and spoke to parents of students. They have informed us that they do not have information that would lead to a substantiated case of any criminal activity. As previously shared, with his permission, Father Gatlin entered a medical treatment program last month and is receiving the care he needs. Last week, he informed us that he would like to resign as pastor of Saint Francis of Assist Parish to focus fully on his health and recovery. I have accepted his resignation. ‘Therefore, Father Graffis will continue as the parish administrator for the coming, months as we begin the process of identifying a new pastor. Though no firm timeline has been determined, it is likely this transition will occur near the end of the year or early next year. 1am very grateful to Father Graffis for his generous service to you, and I ask you to give him your support. Please pray for your parish and school during this time of transition. Please be assured of my prayers for your families and the parish community. Sincerely yours in our Lord, eae Most Reverend Joseph E. Kurtz, D.D. Archbishop of Louisville
